Muzaffarpur Love Jihad: ‘Suraj’ turned out to be Shamshad; woman alleges forced conversion, sexual exploitation

In a disturbing case from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a Hindu woman has accused a man of concealing his identity as ‘Suraj’ to trap her in a relationship. The accused, later identified as Syed Shamshad Hussain, allegedly drugged, sexually exploited her, and pressured her to convert to Islam and consume beef in exchange for marriage

A young woman from the Brahampura Police Station area in Muzaffarpur has filed a serious complaint with the district’s Rural Superintendent of Police, alleging that she was sexually exploited and deceived over several years by a man who concealed his religious identity. The incident has sparked concerns of a case of ‘Love Jihad’—a term used to describe instances where a Hindu woman lured into a relationship by a Muslim man under false pretenses, involving religious conversion.

In her written complaint submitted on April 21, the victim accused a man identified as Syed Shamshad Hussain, who allegedly introduced himself under the false Hindu identity of Suraj, and later pressured her to convert to Islam and consume beef in order to marry him. Alongside Shamshad, the woman also named his brother Almdar Hussain, mother Mehrunisha, and an elder sister for abuse and issuing threats when she demanded justice.

According to the woman, she first met Shamshad in 2007 at a coaching centre in Muzaffarpur, where they became friends and studied together. “At the time, I had no idea about his religion. He said his name was Suraj. I had no reason to doubt him,” she stated in her complaint.

In 2017, she moved to Delhi for employment in the private sector but remained in contact with him. During that period, Shamshad reportedly spoke of his financial struggles and the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings, requesting money multiple times. Trusting his words, she sent him financial aid on several occasions.

However, when she herself faced a financial crisis and asked him to return the money, Shamshad allegedly began avoiding her. “He stopped responding to my calls and eventually switched off his phone. After repeated attempts, I gave up,” she said.

In August 2023, following her mother’s demise, she returned to Muzaffarpur. While shopping in a local market, she unexpectedly encountered Shamshad again. He took her number and reignited contact.

As per the woman’s account, the two resumed meeting and grew close. On April 12, 2024, Shamshad allegedly took her to Patna on his motorcycle. “He booked a hotel room and gave me a drink that was likely laced with sedatives. After consuming it, I lost consciousness and have no recollection of what occurred afterward,” she stated.

She alleged that physical relations took place without her consent. “When I confronted him, he promised marriage and said he would take care of me. I believed him,” she added, claiming their meetings continued after that under the pretext of a future together.

However, when she later insisted on marriage, Shamshad’s tone reportedly changed drastically. “He said his mother would only agree if I converted to Islam. He demanded that I eat beef and undergo religious conversion before nikah,” she revealed, shocked at the sudden disclosure of his true identity.

Things took a darker turn when she visited his residence to ask for the money she had earlier lent. “I found out he was preparing for marriage—with another woman. When I confronted him, he, along with his brother, sister, and mother, verbally abused and assaulted me,” she said.

Further investigations by the woman revealed that “Suraj” was, in fact, Syed Shamshad Hussain, son of Syed Mumtaz Hussain, a resident of the Ahiyapur police station jurisdiction. She reportedly contacted his acquaintances, who confirmed his real identity.

Following this revelation, she confronted him over the phone, demanding a return of her money and threatening to report him to the authorities. In response, Shamshad allegedly issued death threats, warning her of dire consequences.

Muzaffarpur City SP Vidya Sagar confirmed receipt of the complaint. “The woman has filed an application claiming that she was living with the accused, who is now threatening to kill her. The matter has been forwarded to the officer in charge of the Brahampura Police Station for investigation. Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings,” he stated.

The police have yet to confirm whether an FIR has been registered or if any arrests have been made.
