Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has recorded a historic turnover surpassing Rs 1.70 lakh crore for the financial year 2024–25, the highest ever in the history of independent India. KVIC Chairman Shri Manoj Kumar released the provisional figures at a press conference held at the Commission’s Rajghat office in New Delhi, announcing record growth across production, sales, and employment generation.
According to the data, the sector has witnessed an exceptional jump in performance over the past 11 years. Production in Khadi and Village Industries has increased nearly fourfold, registering a 347 per cent growth, from Rs 26,109.07 crore in 2013–14 to Rs 1,16,599.75 crore in 2024–25. Sales, meanwhile, have grown fivefold, soaring from Rs 31,154.19 crore in 2013–14 to an all-time high of Rs 1,70,551.37 crore, a staggering increase of 447 per cent. Employment generation too has shown a remarkable surge of 49.23 per cent in the same period, with KVIC now providing livelihoods to 1.94 crore individuals across the country.
Khadi, once considered a modest rural fabric symbolising India’s independence movement, has undergone a remarkable transformation under the current government’s push for self-reliance and indigenous enterprise. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of the Ministry of MSME, KVIC’s schemes have laid a strong foundation for ‘Viksit Bharat’,” said KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar, attributing the success to the inspirational legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, PM Modi’s promotion of Khadi, and the tireless efforts of artisans working in remote villages.
The production of Khadi fabric alone has increased by 366 per cent over the past 11 years, from Rs 811.08 crore in 2013–14 to Rs 3,783.36 crore in 2024–25. Sales of Khadi garments also saw an unprecedented 561 per cent rise during the same period, leaping from Rs 1,081.04 crore to Rs 7,145.61 crore. Kumar emphasised that the Prime Minister’s repeated endorsement of Khadi from national and international platforms has played a crucial role in driving this growth and turning Khadi into a symbol of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’.
Significant gains have also been recorded in KVIC’s flagship retail outlet, Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan, located in New Delhi. The Bhawan’s turnover has more than doubled, rising from Rs 51.02 crore in 2013–14 to Rs 110.01 crore in 2024–25, a jump of 115 per cent. On the employment front, KVIC’s initiatives have been transformative. Under the Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), more than 10.18 lakh new units have been established, backed by margin money subsidies amounting to Rs 27,166.07 crore and loans totaling Rs 73,348.39 crore, generating employment for over 90 lakh individuals.
Kumar further highlighted the expansion of the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana Scheme, which aims to create employment in rural areas through skill development and tool distribution. The scheme’s budget has seen a 134 per cent increase, from Rs 25.65 crore in 2021–22 to Rs 60 crore in 2025–26. Under the scheme, KVIC has distributed a total of 2,87,752 machines, toolkits, and equipment, including electric pottery wheels, bee boxes, incense stick machines, footwear kits, paper plate machines, and wooden toy-making units. In the last three years alone, 22,284 machines were distributed in 2022–23, 29,854 in 2023–24, and a record 37,218 in 2024–25.
In addition to economic growth, KVIC has also played a pivotal role in empowering women. Over the past decade, 7,43,904 individuals have received training at KVIC’s 35 training centres, of which 57.45 per cent, approximately 4,27,394, are women. Furthermore, women constitute 80 per cent of the nearly five lakh artisans engaged in Khadi production. In a bid to ensure fair compensation, KVIC has increased artisan wages by 275 per cent in the last 11 years, including a 100 per cent hike in the past three years alone.
Chairman Manoj Kumar concluded by asserting that this unprecedented performance has not only revived Khadi as a symbol of national pride but has also significantly contributed to the vision of a self-reliant and developed India. “These achievements are a testament to the strength of our villages, the dedication of our artisans, and the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi,” he said.
