JNU student polls in turmoil: ABVP claims left-orchestrated conspiracy to halt elections

A major political row has erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University after the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) accused the JNU Election Committee of subverting the student union election process. Alleging unconstitutional revisions and partisan interference by Left-aligned groups, ABVP has demanded immediate restoration of democratic norms on campus

A major controversy has erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over what student groups are calling an “artificial crisis” in the student union election process. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has issued a scathing statement, alleging that the university’s Election Committee, under pressure from the Left-aligned student groups, has engaged in unprecedented and unconstitutional actions aimed at derailing the democratic process.

According to ABVP, the JNU Election Committee—entrusted with ensuring a free and fair electoral process—has not only disrupted the election timeline but has also made revisions to the list of nominated candidates after the final date for nominations had closed. The organisation has termed this move “highly condemnable” and “unprecedented in the history of Indian democratic traditions.”

“This is not just an administrative lapse, it is a well-orchestrated conspiracy,” the ABVP said in an official statement.

“It is aimed at curbing the rising popularity of ABVP and the growing trust students are placing in our organization. The Left-aligned groups, fearful of the student mandate, are using underhanded tactics to create instability and fear on campus.”

The controversy comes at a time when student union elections in JNU were gaining momentum after a prolonged gap. ABVP, which has seen increasing support in recent years across campuses nationwide, had expressed confidence in securing a significant victory in the upcoming polls. However, the recent developments have cast a shadow over the integrity of the electoral process.

ABVP has strongly condemned what it described as the “biased and undemocratic behavior” of the Election Committee. “The committee, which should have acted as a neutral body, has unfortunately become a puppet in the hands of the so-called Left United,” the statement said. “Their actions not only violate the norms laid out in the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations but also betray the trust of thousands of students.”

The student organisation has demanded the immediate restoration of the election process and a firm commitment from the university administration to uphold democratic principles. “We urge the authorities to ensure that elections are conducted in a free, fair, and fearless environment. Students must not be held hostage to political manipulations,” ABVP said.

ABVP leaders have further vowed to stand firmly with the student community and continue their fight for justice. “We have always been committed to protecting the rights and interests of students. In the face of this injustice, we will not back down. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the student body and defend the sanctity of democracy on campus.”

The JNU administration and Election Committee have yet to respond to these allegations.
