Guwahati: Even as protests erupted in various parts of the country over the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, Assam remained largely peaceful, with only minor demonstrations reported. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 12 praised the Assam Police for their swift and effective response in maintaining law and order, and highlighted the prevailing atmosphere of unity in the state as it gears up for the Bohag Bihu celebrations.
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma noted that despite Muslims forming nearly 40 per cent of Assam’s population, the protests against the legislation were limited to just three locations across the state. Each of these protests reportedly drew fewer than 150 participants.
“Our state has once again demonstrated its strong sense of harmony and collective spirit,” Sarma wrote. “The Assam Police deserve full credit for being alert and proactive in handling the situation. Their efforts have ensured that no major disruptions occurred, allowing people from all communities to prepare for Bihu with enthusiasm and peace.”
Bohag Bihu, also known as Rongali Bihu, marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year and is one of the most significant festivals in the state. Guwahati, along with other towns and villages, is already witnessing vibrant preparations for the week-long celebrations that promote cultural unity and community bonding.
While Assam maintained peace, several other states witnessed widespread protests on Friday over the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The law, which received the President’s assent on April 5, aims to enhance the management and developmental framework for waqf properties across the country. Protesters in some states have expressed concerns about the implications of the amendments, calling for a rollback.
The bill had earlier cleared both Houses of Parliament during the Budget session, with the Rajya Sabha passing it on April 4 by a margin of 128 to 95 votes. The Lok Sabha approved it the following day, with 288 members voting in favor and 232 against.
As Assam steps into the festive spirit of Bihu, the Chief Minister’s message underscored a broader appeal for communal harmony and mutual respect, reiterating that the state’s people continue to stand together despite national-level controversies.
