In a significant political development, Tirunelveli MLA Nainar Nagendran is set to become the new President of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The announcement is expected to be made shortly, after Nagendran emerged as the sole nominee for the post.

The nomination was proposed by outgoing state president K Annamalai and was unanimously accepted by senior party leaders. Nagendran, a former AIADMK leader and currently serving as the BJP’s state vice-president, is seen as a seasoned political figure with deep roots in southern Tamil Nadu.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in Chennai for key discussions with senior BJP leaders, is believed to have played a pivotal role in facilitating the leadership transition. Political observers view the change as a strategic move aimed at broadening the BJP’s appeal in the state.

Annamalai had earlier announced that he would not seek a second term as state president. Under his leadership, the Tamil Nadu BJP made aggressive outreach efforts, taking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives to grassroots levels across the state.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Amit Shah lauded Annamalai’s tenure as “commendable” and “unprecedented,” while welcoming Nagendran’s elevation. “The Tamil Nadu BJP has received a nomination for the post of state president only from Shri @NainarBJP Ji,” Shah wrote. “The BJP will continue to leverage Annamalai Ji’s strength as we serve the people of Tamil Nadu,” he added.

Annamalai will take up responsibilities in the BJP’s national team, as suggested by Amit Shah, who praised his “unprecedented contribution” in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to the media in Chennai, Amit Shah also made a key political announcement, stating:

“Today, the leaders of AIADMK and BJP have decided that the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections will be contested together by AIADMK, BJP, and allied parties. The election, at the national level, will be fought under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and at the state level under the leadership of AIADMK Chief Shri Edappadi K. Palaniswami.”
