Uttar Pradesh: Dharma Jagran foils alleged religious conversion attempt by Christians in Mathura’s Masoom Nagar

A tense situation unfolded in Masoom Nagar, located in the Maholi area under the Highway police station jurisdiction in Mathura, after reports of an alleged religious conversion attempt triggered protests and a swift police response. A ‘healing meeting’—often associated with evangelical Christian prayer gatherings—was interrupted by the members of Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag (Dharma Jagran Coordination), who alleged that the gathering was a covert attempt at religious conversion by Christian missionaries.

The incident came to light when Vijay Singh Gurjar, department co-convener of the Dharma Jagran Coordination, received information that Christian missionaries were attempting conversions in the locality. Gurjar, along with his team, rushed to the residence of a local man identified as Ter Singh, where a prayer meeting was underway. According to eyewitnesses and Dharma Jagran activists, Bibles were being distributed during the session, raising suspicions about conversion activities.

The protest escalated as more members of the Dharma Jagran Coordination joined the scene, including Mahanagar convenor Balram Singh, project head Vikram Sisodia, co-convenor Girish Rajput, and several other local leaders and volunteers. The group halted the meeting and confronted those involved. Upon their arrival, the Christian group reportedly fled the spot, avoiding confrontation.

A significant crowd of villagers soon gathered, intensifying the atmosphere. Leaders of Dharma Jagran Coordination addressed the locals, warning the influential residents of the village against allowing any such gatherings in the future. They emphasised that repeated incidents would lead to legal consequences and urged the community to remain vigilant against alleged “conversion conspiracies.”

On being alerted by the activists, Station House Officer Anand Kumar Shahi, along with police personnel, promptly arrived at the location. Law enforcement intervened to ensure that the situation did not escalate further and that peace was maintained in the area.

When questioned, Circle Officer (Refinery) Sweta Verma confirmed that police had responded swiftly to the call. “The station in-charge was sent to the location immediately. So far, there is no evidence or official complaint of forced religious conversion. The meeting was dispersed peacefully,” she stated.
