Tensions flare in Assam’s Jagiroad after Muslim mob attack Hindus and threaten to burn village over playground dispute

Jagiroad, Morigaon: Tensions erupted in Khutradol village of Jagiroad after a Muslim mob allegedly attacked Hindu villagers over a playground dispute on the eve of Eid, prompting authorities to deploy security forces for round-the-clock vigilance.

According to reports, the clash began after a scuffle broke out between youths from the two communities over a playground. The altercation quickly escalated, with a Muslim mob assaulting Hindu villagers and issuing threats of dire consequences. A formal complaint has been filed against the attackers for allegedly threatening to burn down the Hindu village.

Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the attack on a Hindu man, but the alleged masterminds remain at large. Locals have accused the authorities of delayed action, exacerbating fears of further violence.

Morigaon District Commissioner Debasish Sharma and Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das have urged both communities to maintain peace. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt harmony,” said Sharma.

History of communal tensions

This is not the first incident of communal strife in the region. On February 9, a Hindu family in Gorumara Doloni village (under Mayong police station) in Jagiroad was brutally attacked by a mob allegedly over a land dispute. Five family members, including a woman and a minor, were severely injured.

Despite an FIR being filed immediately, no arrests were made for days, sparking mass protests on February 12. Thousands of villagers blocked roads, demanding justice and enhanced security.

The incidents highlight long-standing tensions in Morigaon’s riverine areas along the Brahmaputra, where demographic changes over the years have reportedly left Hindu families as minorities. Locals allege that many Hindu households have either fled or face intimidation from majority Muslim communities, some of whom are believed to have migrated from Bangladesh.

Police have assured a swift investigation into both cases, but skepticism remains among villagers who accuse authorities of inaction.

Additional police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent further clashes. Officials have warned against spreading rumors and urged community leaders to foster dialogue.

As the situation remains volatile, the state government faces mounting pressure to address the underlying tensions and ensure justice for victims of communal violence.
