Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to launch the “NITI NCAER States Economic Forum” portal on Tuesday, April 1, in New Delhi. The initiative, a collaborative effort between NITI Aayog and the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), aims to provide a robust repository of data on state finances, encompassing social, economic, and fiscal parameters over the past three decades.
The newly developed portal is designed to serve as a one-stop platform for policymakers, researchers, and analysts seeking insights into state finances and economic trends. Covering the period from 1990-91 to 2022-23, the portal compiles research reports, scholarly papers, and expert analyses on state-level financial trends and fiscal management.
The initiative is expected to fill a critical gap in consolidated sectoral data, offering a structured and accessible format for users interested in studying macroeconomic trends at both the state and national levels.
Key Features of the Portal
The “NITI NCAER States Economic Forum” portal comprises four major components:
State Reports: This section provides detailed summaries of the macroeconomic and fiscal landscapes of all 28 Indian states. The reports are structured around key indicators, including demographic patterns, economic structures, socio-economic parameters, and fiscal health.
Data Repository: A comprehensive database categorised into five verticals—Demography, Economic Structure, Fiscal, Health, and Education. This feature will allow users to directly access critical datasets essential for comparative and historical analysis.
State Fiscal and Economic Dashboard: This interactive dashboard presents graphical representations of key economic variables over time. It provides quick access to raw data through a data appendix and summary tables, facilitating a more visual and comparative analysis of state finances.
Research and Commentary: This section draws from extensive research on state finances and fiscal policy, offering critical insights into financial management at both state and national levels.
According to NITI Aayog, the portal is designed to help stakeholders, including government officials, economists, and policymakers, understand macro, fiscal, demographic, and socio-economic trends effectively. By offering benchmark comparisons between states and national figures, it enables a data-driven approach to policy formulation and economic planning.
Additionally, the portal is expected to serve as a vital forum for informed debates and discussions, providing real-time analytics and historical trend analyses. Researchers will be able to track economic progress, identify emerging patterns, and formulate evidence-based policies aimed at fostering sustainable development.
Government officials highlighted that the user-friendly interface of the portal will ensure seamless access to vital data. By consolidating financial and economic information in a single, accessible platform, the initiative is set to play a crucial role in advancing economic research and policy analysis in India.
The launch of this portal marks a step towards enhancing transparency and data accessibility in state-level economic planning, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering a well-informed policy environment.
