BJP Exposes Mamata’s Alleged Muslim Appeasement in Bengal: TMC accused of removing Hindu voters from electoral rolls

A controversy has erupted in West Bengal as the BJP accuses Mamata Banerjee’s TMC of systematically removing the names of Bengali Hindus from the electoral rolls. The party claims this move is part of Mamata’s alleged Muslim appeasement politics aimed at consolidating her vote base ahead of upcoming elections

A new controversy surrounding voter manipulation has erupted in West Bengal as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claims that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is systematically removing the names of Hindu and Hindi-speaking voters from the state’s electoral rolls.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has accused the TMC of orchestrating a fraudulent voter verification campaign under the pretext of eliminating fake voters. The BJP has also raised concerns over what they term as Mamata Banerjee’s “Muslim appeasement” politics, alleging that it is part of a broader strategy to disenfranchise Bengali Hindus.

On March 24, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, presented claims and evidence at a press conference, alleging that since February 27, 2025, Hindu and Hindi-speaking voters in Bengal have been unfairly struck off the voter list. According to Adhikari, the TMC government has engaged in a targeted effort to remove voters, specifically from areas with a significant Bengali Hindu and Hindi-speaking population.

Adhikari’s allegations were particularly focused on Krishnanagar and Bagda, where the BJP claims the highest number of complaints have come from. “Hindu voters’ names are being removed from the voter list. I urge the Election Commission to sack the BDO of Krishnanagar,” said Adhikari.

A major aspect of the controversy centres around the alleged practice of questioning Hindu voters about their citizenship status. Adhikari claimed that Hindu voters were being asked to prove that they were not Bangladeshis. Those who submitted Form 7 to correct discrepancies in the voter list were allegedly coerced into providing additional proof of their identity and citizenship. Adhikari has also stated that the BJP plans to hold peaceful protests in these areas to voice their opposition to what they describe as illegal voter suppression.

In a statement, the BJP accused the TMC of engaging in voter suppression based on caste and religious lines, with Mamata Banerjee’s administration allegedly focusing on appeasing Muslim voters at the expense of disenfranchising Hindu voters. The party further contends that the TMC is using the voter list purge to secure electoral advantages by removing voters who may not align with the party’s political agenda.
The Election Commission of India has yet to comment on the allegations, but the situation in West Bengal remains tense as the state gears up for future elections.

As the controversy unfolds, the BJP has called for swift action from the Election Commission to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. With Mamata Banerjee’s TMC under scrutiny, questions surrounding voter suppression, citizenship verification, and political manipulation are expected to dominate the political discourse in West Bengal in the coming months.
