Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to Hindu traditions and national pride while managing the aftermath of the January 29 stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.
Addressing officials from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and the Indian Postal Service in Lucknow, he highlighted the administration’s efficient crisis management efforts that prevented widespread panic among the eight crore devotees and sadhus present at the time. This ensured the dignity of India’s grandest spiritual gathering, which remained intact.
The tragic incident, which occurred at the Sangam ghat on Mauni Amavasya, claimed at least 30 lives and left 60 others injured. The CM stated that his government swiftly deployed medical aid, ensured seamless evacuation, and maintained order despite the enormity of the gathering. Yogi Adityanath stressed that excessive media coverage could have worsened the situation, making it critical to handle communication carefully and prevent anti-Hindu elements from politicizing the event.
Adityanath explained that a key challenge was ensuring the traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ (holy dip) by the 13 akhadas proceeded without dispute over the bathing sequence, a sacred tradition integral to Sanatan Dharma. Despite the tragedy, the akhadas were prepared to continue with the ritual. The CM personally intervened, requesting a delay in the schedule to facilitate crisis management. By closely monitoring the crowd and efficiently evacuating the Sangam area by noon, the administration successfully resumed the ‘Snan’ at 2:30 pm.
“Difficult situations demand patience and decisive action,” Adityanath remarked, emphasising the importance of effective coordination among stakeholders, including devotees, sadhus, and administrative officials, to uphold the sanctity of the Kumbh Mela, a hallmark of Bharat’s spiritual heritage.
The Chief Minister also addressed concerns regarding pollution at the Sangam, dismissing reports that questioned water quality during the Mahakumbh as propaganda aimed at tarnishing the spiritual essence of the event. He assured that extensive water quality monitoring confirmed the river remained clean throughout the event.
Despite concerns raised by organisations such as UNESCO, Adityanath pointed out that independent lab results and state pollution control board assessments consistently found the water within safe limits. Recalling an incident from 2013, when the prime minister of Mauritius refrained from taking a dip due to pollution in the Ganga under the previous government’s neglect, Adityanath emphasised that his government ensured such a situation did not recur under the leadership of the BJP, which is committed to the protection of India’s rivers and heritage.
To maintain water purity, the state government implemented preventive measures, ensuring that no sewage or industrial waste entered the Ganga or Yamuna. In Kanpur, historically a critical pollution hotspot, the government halted the daily discharge of four crore litres of untreated sewage into the Ganga, a problem persisting for 125 years due to previous administrations’ apathy. Strict monitoring of tannery effluents and the installation of round-the-clock CCTV surveillance have helped maintain water quality.
In Prayagraj, sewage treatment plants under the Namami Gange project were enhanced, employing bio-remediation techniques to further purify wastewater. Despite these efforts, Adityanath noted that some groups attempted to spread false reports on pollution levels to defame the efforts of the Modi-led BJP government. To counter such misinformation, the government engaged multiple independent labs and private agencies for water quality verification.
The CM detailed findings from rigorous water testing conducted between January 11 and February 26. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels at the Sangam remained below three, often at one or two, while Dissolved Oxygen (DO) consistently measured between eight and ten, well above the required threshold of five. Additionally, tests on fecal coliform levels, a key indicator of contamination, showed that MPN levels at the Sangam were consistently around 100, far below the permissible limit of 2,500.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath, India is witnessing a resurgence of its ancient spiritual and cultural legacy. The meticulous planning and execution of the Mahakumbh reflect the BJP government’s dedication to preserving Bharat’s Sanatan traditions while ensuring that such grand events remain secure, well-organised, and accessible to devotees.
Adityanath also emphasised that the government is working tirelessly to promote India’s spiritual tourism, enhancing infrastructure and amenities for pilgrims. The construction of grand temples, restoration of pilgrimage sites, and initiatives like the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya stand as testimonies to this commitment.
Asserting the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding India’s spiritual identity, Adityanath called upon the people to stand united against those who attempt to create discord through misinformation. “Bharat’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage faces constant challenges from forces that seek to undermine our traditions. It is our duty to remain vigilant and resolute in safeguarding our sacred legacy,” he said.
Adityanath reiterated his government’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of the Ganga and ensuring a pollution-free Mahakumbh experience. “Our efforts have successfully controlled pollution, ensuring that pilgrims could take their holy dip in clean water,” he said, emphasising that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental protection, Hindu values, and the promotion of Bharat’s spiritual and cultural legacy.
The Mahakumbh of 2025 is expected to be even grander, with the BJP-led government ensuring that it becomes a global symbol of India’s spiritual renaissance, drawing millions of devotees from across the world. With infrastructural advancements, robust crowd management strategies, and an unshakable dedication to Sanatan Dharma, the Yogi-led administration is paving the way for a divine and seamless pilgrimage experience for all.
