Narayanpur: A labourer was killed while another sustained injuries after they accidently came in contact of a Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Maoists near an iron ore mine in Narayanpur district on March 7, said officials.

The IED explosion occurred at around 11 in the morning near Aamdai Ghati iron ore mine under the Chhote Dongar police station limits of Narayanpur, injuring the labourers.

Both the injured were quickly rushed to a nearby healthcare facility and later referred to the district hospital at Narayanpur.

One of the injured labourer Dilip Kumar Baghel later succumbed to his injuries during the treatment. The condition of the other injured labourer Harendra Nag is said to be stable.

Notably another labourer had sustained injuries in a similar IED explosion near the mine area in February this year. In another similar occurrence in the mine area, as many as three labourers were badly injured in a strong explosion in November 2023.

Two of the injured labourers in the attack succumb to their injuries soon after the blast. The deceased were identified as Ritesh Gagda (24) and Sharvan Gagda (21) both residents of Narayanpur district. The explosion occurred early in the morning when the workers were heading to their workplace.

It must be noted here that the extremists are long opposing the mining project at the said sites and have issued threat notes against Jayaswal Neco Industries Limited (JNIL), a company associated with the mining work in the area at occasions.

Earlier the Purvi Bastar Division Committee of the banned group had threatened to target the location till the suspension of the mining project at the site. The extremist via a press noted had said that the whole area is covered with hundreds of bomb which will keep exploding.

Notably a number of security posts were opened in the area to protect the mining work at the Aamdai mines. The project provides employment opportunity to hundreds of local villagers.
