Uttar Pradesh: To maintain peace as Holi and Friday prayers coincide, Namaz timings changed to 2 PM in Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government and religious leaders have coordinated to reschedule Friday prayers to 2 pm on March 14 to ensure harmony between Holi celebrations and Ramadan observances. Security measures, including additional police deployment and public awareness campaigns, have been implemented to maintain peace.

In an effort to maintain communal harmony and ensure smooth observance of both religious practices, the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali, has announced a change in the timing of Friday prayers on March 14. Since the festival of Holi coincides with the second Friday of Ramadan, the Maulana has urged all mosque committees to extend the time of Jumme ki Namaaz to 2 pm.

Revised Namaz Timing

As per the advisory issued, the Friday prayers at Jama Masjid in Idgah, Lucknow, will now take place at 2 pm instead of the usual 12:45 pm. This adjustment takes into account that Holi celebrations, which involve playing with colors, generally continue until 1 pm. The Maulana has requested all mosques that typically hold Friday prayers between 12:30 pm and 1 pm to reschedule the prayers to 2 pm for the convenience of both communities.

Maulana Khalid Rashid emphasised that Muslims should offer Friday prayers in their local mosques instead of traveling long distances. Given that March 14 is a public holiday, this step will help avoid unnecessary movement and potential disruptions. He believes that this decision will reinforce the essence of India’s Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb (composite culture), fostering national unity and mutual respect among communities.

The initiative aims to prevent any inconvenience to either community. By adjusting the timing, Muslims can fulfill their religious obligations without disrupting the Holi celebrations of the Hindu community.

Maulana Yasoob Abbas, General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, also backed the decision, urging everyone to maintain an atmosphere of peace and brotherhood. He stressed that all efforts should be made to prevent any conflict, ensuring that Holi and Ramadan coexist in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken proactive steps to ensure peace and order during the simultaneous observance of Holi and Friday prayers. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to deploy additional security personnel in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents. Police officials are coordinating with religious leaders and local administration to facilitate smooth celebrations and prayers without disturbances.

District authorities have also issued guidelines emphasising cooperation and mutual respect. Public announcements and awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate citizens about the importance of maintaining harmony. Surveillance measures, including CCTV monitoring and drone surveillance, are being enhanced in crowded areas to ensure safety.

To further bolster security, the state administration has put special forces on alert, particularly in areas with a history of communal tensions. Rapid Action Force (RAF) units will be deployed in strategic locations, and additional police pickets will be set up near religious sites and major Holi gathering spots. Senior police officials will be patrolling throughout the day to monitor the situation closely and intervene promptly if needed.

The government has also urged local peace committees, comprising representatives from both Hindu and Muslim communities, to hold meetings and encourage open dialogue to reinforce the spirit of unity. Helplines have been set up to swiftly address any concerns related to public safety and communal harmony.

The Chief Minister’s Office has emphasised that all citizens should cooperate in upholding peace and ensuring that Holi and Friday prayers are observed without disruption. These measures have been well received by both communities, reinforcing Lucknow’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony.
