Patna: One of the accused named in Phulwarisharif module of Popular Front of India (PFI), surrenders before a special court (UAPA) of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar. The accused Md. Afroz was said to be on the run for two years.

A resident of Mehsi block of West Champaran district, Afroz was accused of organising training camps for youths at Baruraj. He was also wanted in connection with the Phulwasrisarif case. The surrendered accused was close with Md. Riyaz Morif, the vice president of PFI Bihar’s unit.

According to the reports, the accused organised a camp in Parsauni village of Baruraj. The camp was reportedly organised at Kadir Ansari’s house where training was provided to youths.

The matter came to light after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in February 2023 arrested Md Bilal from Chakia of West Champaran district. During interrogation Bilal revealed the details of other cadres of the group. The sleuths of the agency then s raided Ansari’s house and seized documents and banners related to the said training camp held at Parsauni.

Following NIA’s action, a case was subsequently registered at Baruraj police stations under provisions of Unlawful Action Prevention Act (UAPA) against five accused namely Bilal, Kadir, Riyaz, Afroz and Yakub alias Sultan. While three of the accused are already in judicial remand, the fourth accused Yakub is on the run.

Earlier the agency arrested a key accused in connection with the case from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi in the first week of January.

The accused Sajjad Alam, a resident of East Champaran district of Bihar was arrested on arrival from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). A team of the NIA nabbed the accused as soon as he landed at the IGI airport.

Alam, a trained cadre of the banned PFI, had an arrest warrant issued against him by the NIA special court in Patna and also had a Look Out Circular issued against him.

As per NIA’s investigations, the accused was involved in channelising illegal funds from Dubai to PFI cadres in Bihar through a UAE, Karnataka and Kerala-based syndicate. The funds were used for promoting the banned outfit’s criminal and unlawful activities.

The Phulwarisharif PFI case relates to involvement of PFI cadres in unlawful and anti-national activities. The cadres had conspired to create an atmosphere of terror and spread religious enmity between members of different religions and groups through activities prejudicial to the maintenance of peace and harmony in the country.

The NIA, which took over the investigation days after the registration of the original case in July 2020, have arrested and chargesheeted as many as 18 accused in the case.
