Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has proposed renaming the Indus Valley Civilization as the ‘Saraswati-Sindhu Civilization’, arguing that modern scientific research has established its historical and cultural continuity with the Vedic civilization. Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day conference on Indus Civilization: Its Culture and People – Archaeological Insights at DG Vaishnav College in Chennai, Governor Ravi asserted that the wisdom inherited from this civilization, as reflected in the Vedas, has shaped Bharat’s identity and culture for thousands of years.

In his address, Governor Ravi underscored that the Indus Valley Civilization remains relevant today due to its deep cultural roots in India. He highlighted the massive attendance at the Maha Kumbh Mela, where 77 crore people participated without formal invitations, as a testament to the continued spiritual and cultural legacy of this ancient civilization.
Governor Ravi emphasized that modern scientific advancements, including satellite imaging and nuclear physics, have confirmed the existence of the Saraswati-Sindhu civilization, aligning it with the Vedic tradition. He urged scholars and historians to proactively disseminate historically accurate narratives about this civilization and counter misinterpretations propagated by colonial-era historians and Marxist ideologues.
Denouncing the Aryan Invasion Theory
The Governor strongly criticized the Aryan Invasion Theory, calling it a fabrication by colonial rulers and Marxist historians to create divisions within Indian society. He stated that “intellectual and political violence” had been inflicted on India’s historical narrative through deliberate distortions. According to him, European colonialists, Karl Marx, and certain Dravidian ideologues falsely promoted the idea of racial differences between Aryans and Dravidians.

He accused British-era scholars of fabricating 20 misleading research articles to support the Aryan invasion myth, with Indian Marxist historian D.D. Kosambi further perpetuating these ideas in his works. Ravi noted that while even European scholars have started distancing themselves from this theory, in Tamil Nadu, it continues to be used to propagate divisions.
Dravidian Ideologues and Historical Distortions
Governor Ravi criticized Dravidian ideologues for attempting to appropriate the Indus Valley Civilization as their own while falsely portraying Aryans as barbaric invaders. He alleged that certain political groups had commissioned books to reinforce this narrative, despite a lack of supporting evidence in Tamil or Sanskrit literature.
“There is no mention of any Aryan-Dravidian conflict in our ancient literature. Tamil and Vedic texts, among the oldest in the world, do not refer to Aryans as a separate race,” he said.
He further cited a Harvard Medical Journal article from 1990, which reported that DNA studies of ancient skeletons found across India showed genetic homogeneity. If a large-scale migration or invasion had occurred, significant genetic differences would have been observed, but no such differences were found, debunking the invasion theory.

Saraswati River and its Historical Significance
Referencing ancient texts, Governor Ravi highlighted the importance of the Saraswati River in Indian history. He cited poet Kalidasa’s Kumarasambhavam, which mentions the Saraswati River flowing into the Arabian Sea near Somnath, Gujarat. He also referred to the Mahabharata, which describes Lord Krishna’s brother, Balarama, residing along the river, which once flowed between the Sutlej and Yamuna before drying up 2,500 years ago.
Colonial and Ideological Manipulation of Indian History
Governor Ravi accused colonial rulers of deliberately distorting Indian history to weaken national unity. He stated that British historians and Marxist scholars infused misleading ideas into the Indian education system, creating a false racial divide between Aryans and Dravidians. He lamented that for the past 60-70 years, Tamil Nadu’s political narrative has been shaped by these misconceptions, with students being taught a “poisonous ideology of division.”
“None of India’s classical literature, whether Tamil Sangam texts or Vedic scriptures, has ever used the term Aryan to denote a race. The artificial racial division has been propagated over the last few decades,” Ravi asserted.
Governor Ravi urged scholars, historians, and intellectuals to reclaim India’s historical truth by promoting an accurate narrative of the Saraswati-Sindhu Civilization. He called for a comprehensive national resurgence by embracing India’s Vedic heritage and discarding colonial-era distortions.
“The wisdom of this civilization, as preserved in the Vedas, has shaped Bharat’s identity and continues to inspire our personal, national, and global outlooks,” he said.
