Raipur: A notorious Maoist commander involved in multiple ambushes that led to martyrdom of over 100 personnel surrenders before the officials in violence ridden Bastar division of Chhattisgarh.
Dinesh Modiyam, secretary of the Gangloor Area Committee along with his wife and child surrender before the Bijapur police, fearing his safety. He was active as a Divisional Committee (DVC) Member and carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh.
Modiyam, a synonym of terror in Bijapur during his association years with the banned group, was involved in multiple ambushes, resulting in loss of lives for over 100 security personnel. He was a seasoned Maoist and considered an expert in Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Modiyam joined the Maoist group at a tender age and rose to the rank of DVC. He is also considered close to Central Committee member Madavi Hidma and Deva Barse, the commander of Maoist’s strongest unit battalion no 1.
His wife Kala Tati was holding Area Committee Member (ACM) rank in the same unit. She was carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on her head as announced by the government.
The surrender of Modiyam is being seen as a body blow to the outlawed group in south Bastar area, where the extremists are already on the back foot given persistent offensive campaigns of security forces.
Maoists kill civilian in Bastar’s Sukma district
In another related development, members of banned CPI (Maoist) have executed another civilian in insurgency-hit Sukma district. The deceased was identified as 65-year-old Kalmu Hidma.
Hidma, a resident of Sukma’s Pentapad village which falls under the jurisdiction of CHintagufa police station was executed on Monday evening, March 3. He was said to be a relative of former Communist Party of India (CPI) MLA Manish Kunjam.
The incident has once again highlighted the looming threat faced by the civilians residing in areas dominated by the proscribed outfit as this was overall 9th such incident of civilian killing reported this year.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the case and more details about the incident are still awaited.
