Imphal: Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army, conducted a two-day visit to Manipur on February 24–25, to assess security dynamics along the sensitive Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB) and review progress on strategic border infrastructure projects. This includes the ongoing border fencing construction along the Myanmar border.
The visit underscored the Army’s commitment to bolstering stability and coordination in the region amid evolving security challenges.
Key Engagements and Assessments
During his visit, Lt. Gen. Ghai held high-level meetings with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the State Security Advisor, Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and other civil and security officials. Discussions centered on enhancing operational preparedness, addressing security concerns in border and fringe areas, and fostering a collaborative “whole-of-government” approach to ensure comprehensive border management.
The DGMO emphasised the need to strengthen security infrastructure along the border while prioritizing the normalization of the state’s security environment. He also reviewed ongoing initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and surveillance capabilities in remote areas, critical for countering cross-border threats.
Strengthening Coordination
Lt. Gen. Ghai’s interactions highlighted the Indian Army’s close coordination with state authorities to implement security and developmental measures. “A unified approach between military, civil administration, and local stakeholders is vital to sustaining peace and ensuring the welfare of Manipur’s people,” he noted. The dialogue also explored strategies to address insurgency, illegal activities, and community concerns in vulnerable zones.
Focus on Stability and Development
The visit reinforced the Army’s role in supporting Manipur’s dual goals of security and socio-economic progress. By evaluating infrastructure projects such as roads, border outposts, and communication networks, the DGMO underscored the importance of robust connectivity to integrate frontier regions with mainstream development.
Governor Bhalla lauded the Army’s efforts, stating, “The synergy between security forces and the state government is pivotal to fostering lasting stability and growth in Manipur.”
Lt. Gen. Ghai’s assessment comes amid heightened focus on the Northeast’s security landscape, particularly along the porous Indo-Myanmar border. His visit signals the Indian Army’s proactive stance in addressing transnational threats while advancing infrastructure to secure trade routes and tribal communities.
