Tamil Nadu, after earning a sobriquet of ganja state, has now got another one of Tamil Nadu’s top sexual assault cases in the country. This is real progress, a proud progression for the Dravidian model DMK government, which claims women empowerment and equality.
A netizen says, “In 40 days, 120 cases of sexual assault, abuse, torture, etc. This made the people panic and fearful of not venturing out even in those times. In the last 9 days, there have been 48 sexual assaults. Under Stalin’s Dravidian model rule, the safety of women and children has become a concern and a big question mark. Besides, hundreds of complaints were not registered by the police and were non-reported by victims to avoid social stigma.

A second case of sexual assault on a moving train in Tamil Nadu in less than a week shocked the safety of women and one who travels in public conveyance like trains in Tamil Nadu, underscoring the tenacity of predators, the support of the ruling party and loopholes in the law that permit them to get bail so easily only to continue their crimes against women.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on February 9 came in for criticism after revealing the identity of the survivor in a press release posted on X announcing aid to women. It mentioned her name, native village and husband’s name. Following widespread outrage on social media, the CMO handle deleted the post and issued a revised press release. Under Section 73 of the BNS, disclosing the identity of a rape or sexual assault victim is a punishable offence, attracting up to two years of imprisonment.

This is not the first time police have leaked the name. Earlier, statements made in the FIR of Anna University victim and woman who was chased in a car by DMK flag-fitted men on ECR road were leaked to the media. This is against the SC direction, which says identity, names of victims, pictures, and videos should be made public.
On February 6, a woman, who was four months pregnant, was molested and pushed out of a train when she resisted the attempts of a habitual offender near Vellore in a lady’s compartment. It led to her suffering a miscarriage and being admitted to an ICU ward of a private hospital. This incident is still in the memory of many; a native of Aruppukottai, K Satishkumar (33), tried to assault and molest a 26 years old woman in an unreserved coach of Tuticorin-Okha express at 3 am. He was nabbed by the co-passengers who came to her rescue on hearing her cries for help. The incident took place when the train was nearing Erode. She also alerted 136 ( helpline).

Tambaram Police arrested a 24-year-old final year law college student, Tamilarasan, DMK functionary, on charges of blackmailing and extorting money from several women after gaining their trust with promises of marriage. Based on a complaint from a 22-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh, he was arrested. She found a lot of women on Tamilarasan’s laptop. Police arrested a 29-year-old Dinesh from Villupuram for allegedly sending an obscene image to a 26-year-old woman from Choolaimedu on her Facebook messenger in September 2024. She also received multiple video calls from him. Based on her complaint, police arrested Dinesh at Eddapayalaym in Villupuram district and seized his phone.
Police arrested a teacher of a school in Chennimalai in the Erode district for making two students pregnant. Doctors, upon examining her, found she was 4 months pregnant when she was taken to a hospital for sickness. When questioned, she said that English teacher Manickam, who was a close relative – brother of his father- raped her when she was alone in the house after threatening to kill her if she resisted and repeated this on more occasions. Police, based on her statement, arrested the accused, who had children through his wife, under POCSO.

Police plan to arrest 37-year-old Ilaiyakannu, a temporary science teacher who taught students from Classes 6 to 10. He has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act following multiple complaints. Police plan to take Ilayakkanu in their custody to probe the allegations of misbehaving with over ten female students in Yercaude in Salem district. Police have received the statement from the victims individually. The students made a list of complaints to District child welfare officials who visited the school to get the facts straight.

Parents who found blood injuries in the private parts of 6-year-old students unable to narrate what had happened demanded action against the assailants. This happened in a Dharul Islam Nursery and Primary school at Vadakku Mangudi near Ayyampettai in Thanjavur district.

BJP leaders who came to the rescue of the victim asked for a thorough probe and stringent action against the persons involved. The girl has been admitted to a private hospital where she is getting treatment for the injuries.
In Vellore, a young woman was gang raped after giving her spiked cool drinks when she came to receive the amount she made in the Chit firm run by the assailants. The 30-year-old woman from Chinna Kancheepuram had sold off her land a few months back. She invested Rs 15 lakh with Altaf Dasin, who operates a private finance company near Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district. She reportedly also persuaded her acquaintances to invest in the same company and is said to have raised Rs 1.7 crore from people she knew. Altaf returned only Rs 40 lakh and refused to pay back the remaining amount. When Altaf refused to return the remaining funds, she was lured to Vellore, drugged, and assaulted. After this, the gang intimidated her and claimed that they had recorded the incident and would release the video if she continued to demand the money. Police have arrested six suspects based on her complaint.
