The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has taken a groundbreaking step in revolutionizing education with the establishment of the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). This extensive online repository provides students with access to academic resources across multiple disciplines and educational levels. The initiative aims to bridge learning gaps by offering a centralized, user-friendly platform for accessing educational content, thereby fostering inclusive and equitable learning opportunities nationwide.

The NDLI is an initiative backed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Its primary goal is to facilitate seamless access to learning resources through a unified digital platform, ensuring that students, educators, and researchers can retrieve academic materials effortlessly.

Launched in 2015, the NDLI has built an extensive digital repository that currently houses nearly 55 million resources. These materials include textbooks, research papers, lecture videos, audiobooks, simulations, fiction, and academic articles. The platform is designed to cater to learners from primary education to postgraduate studies and beyond, covering a broad range of subject areas.

NDLI is designed to offer a tailored and intuitive experience by utilizing advanced search functionalities, including refined filtering options and federated searching capabilities. These features streamline the process of locating relevant study materials, allowing students to efficiently access the information they need. Furthermore, NDLI provides customised content for various academic groups, including school and college students, candidates preparing for competitive examinations, and researchers.

Recognizing India’s linguistic diversity, NDLI ensures that its resources are accessible in multiple languages. The platform supports an interface available in ten widely spoken Indian languages, thereby enhancing accessibility for students from different linguistic backgrounds and regions.

A key highlight of NDLI is its focus on making education universally accessible. The platform is designed to support users across all academic levels, including differently-abled learners. By ensuring compatibility with various digital devices, NDLI eliminates barriers to education, allowing students from all backgrounds to benefit from its vast academic repository.

The project’s development, management, and continuous evolution are led by IIT Kharagpur, with significant contributions from its faculty and researchers. Under the leadership of Dr. Partha Pratim Das from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NDLI has expanded its reach and impact, positioning itself as a pivotal force in India’s digital education landscape.

For its contributions to digital learning, NDLI has received notable recognition. In 2024, the platform was honored with the ‘Gems of Digital India Award,’ highlighting its role in advancing digital literacy and education accessibility across the country.

In an effort to strengthen user engagement, NDLI has introduced the NDLI Club – a community-driven initiative that encourages active participation among students, educators, and researchers. The club organizes workshops, training sessions, and interactive events to familiarize users with NDLI’s features and resources. Membership is open to all individuals affiliated with educational institutions who are keen on leveraging digital resources for learning and research.

The National Digital Library of India is a transformative initiative that signifies a major leap in India’s education sector. By offering a single-window digital repository, it has simplified access to quality academic resources, fostering a culture of lifelong learning. As NDLI continues to expand, it holds the potential to reshape the educational framework of the country, making learning more accessible, inclusive, and future-ready.
