Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on January 30 said that some politicians were conspiring with organisations that wanted to split Manipur during the ongoing crisis in the state. CM Singh said that the politics of ethnic matters has exacerbated internal tensions inside the state and created uncertainty.  While speaking to a crowd in Khangabok, Thoubal district he said opportunist politicians are trying to split the state taking advantage of the ongoing ethnic tension.

The CM also talked about the continuous violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which has resulted in thousands of displaced persons and over 250 fatalities since May 2023. Many individuals still do not fully get the nuances of the situation, he noted. CM Singh explained that rather than targeting people who had already moved in Manipur prior to the crisis, the state government’s opposition is aimed at recent immigrants engaged in drug-related operations.

Meanwhile, Manipur Police and security personnel apprehended several militants connected to various banned groups throughout the state as part of a significant crackdown on militant activity. On Wednesday, January 29, Manipur Police detained two active RPF/PLA members who were extorting money from stores in and near Paona Bazar. They are Yengkhom Gyandas Singh @ Dinku @ Chaningkhomba (24), and Nepram Bothe Meitei (24). Two cell phones, a wallet with Rs. 6,210, an Aadhaar card, a two-wheeler, and a.32 pistol with a magazine filled with seven rounds of 7.65mm ammunition were among the items recovered from their possession. In another operation that same day, security personnel detained two active PREPAK (PRO) members from Tentha in the Thoubal District’s Khongjom Police Station.

They are Yengkhom Gyandas Singh @ Dinku @ Chaningkhomba (24), and Nepram Bothe Meitei (24). Two cell phones, a wallet with Rs. 6,210, an Aadhaar card, a two-wheeler, and a.32 pistol with a magazine filled with seven rounds of 7.65mm ammunition were among the items recovered from their possession. In another operation that same day, security personnel detained two active PREPAK (PRO) members from Tentha in the Thoubal District’s Khongjom Police Station. They are Kiyam Open Meitei @ Penthokpa (41) and Leishangthem Hemanta Singh @ Leishemba (41).
