Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is facing severe backlash for his controversial allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Haryana government. Kejriwal accused the state administration of contaminating the Yamuna River with poison, thereby endangering Delhi’s water supply. In response to these claims, the Haryana government has taken legal action and decided to lodge an FIR against him.
Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Vipul Goel confirmed that an FIR was being registered against Kejriwal under Sections 2(d) and 54 of the Disaster Management Act for allegedly spreading misinformation and inciting panic among the residents of Delhi and Haryana. “He should be ashamed of himself for making such irresponsible statements… Even Cabinet Ministers and the Prime Minister of the country consume the same water. The people of Delhi will expel him from politics in the coming days,” Goel remarked.
Haryana CM Rebukes Kejriwal, Challenges Allegations
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini strongly condemned Kejriwal’s accusations, stating that the AAP leader had “lost his mental balance” due to fears of an electoral defeat. He demanded an immediate apology from Kejriwal, failing which legal action, including a defamation suit, would be pursued.
“Kejriwal has insulted the very land where he was born. His claims are baseless. He must explain which poison was added to the Yamuna, how much of it was used, and if it was truly toxic, where is the evidence of dead fish in the river?” questioned Saini. To refute Kejriwal’s assertions, CM Saini publicly drank Yamuna water at Pallav Ghat, the point where the river enters Delhi.
Election Commission Directs Kejriwal to Provide Evidence
In a related development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notice to Kejriwal on Tuesday following a complaint lodged by the BJP. The Commission has asked Kejriwal to present evidence supporting his claims by 8 PM on January 29. The ECI stated that the matter was being reviewed in light of the Model Code of Conduct and relevant legal provisions.
PM Modi Criticises Kejriwal’s Remarks
Addressing a public rally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticised Kejriwal’s statements, dismissing them as baseless and sensationalist. “The Yamuna water is consumed by judges, diplomats, and even the poor. How can one imagine that Haryana would poison it just to harm Modi?” the PM questioned.
He further condemned Kejriwal’s insinuations, emphasising that Haryana and Delhi share familial and cultural ties. “A former Chief Minister of Delhi has made disgusting allegations against the people of Haryana. Are the people of Haryana different from those in Delhi? Do they not have relatives in Delhi? Would they poison the very water their own people drink?” Modi asked.
Kejriwal Compares Alleged Poisoning to Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Despite mounting criticism, Kejriwal reiterated his claims in a video shared on social media platform X. He accused the BJP-led Haryana government of attempting “mass genocide” in Delhi by contaminating the city’s water supply.
“The people of Delhi receive drinking water from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The BJP government in Haryana has poisoned the Yamuna water. Fortunately, the Delhi Jal Board was vigilant enough to stop the contaminated water from entering the city, preventing what could have been a catastrophe,” Kejriwal alleged.
In a controversial analogy, Kejriwal compared the situation to the US nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. “Such actions are typically carried out by enemy nations, like the US dropping nuclear bombs on Japan. Some countries use biological weapons to poison rivers, and now the BJP government has done the same,” he claimed.
BJP Calls Kejriwal’s Allegations Reckless, Demands Apology
The BJP has dismissed Kejriwal’s statements as a desperate political stunt ahead of the elections, calling on him to apologise for misleading the public. The Haryana government has vowed to take stringent legal measures if Kejriwal fails to provide concrete proof of his allegations.
As political tensions escalate, all eyes remain on the Election Commission’s directive and Kejriwal’s response to the notice issued against him.
