In a chilling crime that has shocked the city, a man named Ibrahim was arrested for the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a 5-year-old boy at Lucknow’s Charbagh railway station. The incident, which unfolded on the night of December 16, has taken a gruesome turn with the accused making inflammatory remarks about the victim’s religion.

Details of the Crime

The young victim and his mother, who had travelled from Rajasthan, were at the station waiting for a connecting train to Pratapgarh. The mother, exhausted from the journey, fell asleep in the waiting room, leaving her son momentarily unattended. It was during this time that Ibrahim, who had been present at the station, befriended the child, offering him snacks like biscuits and chips.

Witnesses and CCTV footage, later reviewed by the Government Railway Police (GRP), show Ibrahim coaxing both the mother and child to consume rice, after which they both lost consciousness. Upon waking, the mother found her child missing, prompting an immediate alert to the authorities.

Discovery and Arrest

A frantic search ensued, leading to the grim discovery of the boy’s body in a warehouse within the Charbagh railway premises. The child had been brutally raped and murdered, with a subsequent post-mortem revealing additional head injuries.

The breakthrough in the case came from CCTV footage capturing Ibrahim’s movements with the child towards Anand Nagar Second Entry via a foot-overbridge. Further, a jacket Ibrahim left at a condom rack contained a piece of paper with a mobile number, which proved crucial in tracing him. This number led police to a worker who provided Ibrahim’s whereabouts, culminating in his arrest.

Confrontation and Confession

When confronted by police in the presence of the boy’s devastated mother, Ibrahim made a shocking statement, saying, “If your son was a Muslim, he would have been saved, he was a Hindu. We attack Hindus,” followed by laughter, according to reports from the mother’s interview with Dainik Bhaskar. The mother reportedly fainted upon hearing these words and Ibrahim’s laughter.

Police Response

GRP Dharamvir Singh, commenting on the case, confirmed that Ibrahim, a resident of Lakhimpur, was taken into custody and charged under sections for rape and murder. The police emphasized the extensive use of CCTV footage from around 40 cameras at the station in piecing together the sequence of events and identifying the perpetrator.

Community and Legal Repercussions

This heinous act has sparked outrage and calls for justice, emphasising not only the crime’s brutality but also the bigotry expressed by the accused. The case has raised concerns about communal tensions and the safety of children in public spaces. Legal proceedings are underway, with the community and activists demanding stringent punishment and a thorough investigation into any possible communal motives behind this act of violence.
