The United States Embassy in Pakistan has issued a dire warning for its citizens, urging them to avoid the Serena Hotel in Peshawar and its surrounding areas, including the Peshawar Golf Club, until December 16, 2024. The advisory comes amid heightened fears of terrorism and insurgent activities in the volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province.
The embassy, citing intelligence received by the US Mission, has instructed its personnel to steer clear of the area. This warning is part of a broader Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for the KPK region, emphasising the critical nature of the threat.
Known for its history of insurgency, KPK has seen frequent attacks by active terrorist groups targeting civilians, security forces, and government institutions. The advisory outlines the grave risks in the region:
“Active terrorist and insurgent groups routinely conduct attacks against civilians, non-governmental organisations, government offices, and security forces. These groups historically have targeted both government officials and civilians. Assassination and kidnapping attempts are common, including the targeting of polio eradication teams and government security personnel.”
This recent alert also follows a violent flare-up in the Kurram district, bordering Afghanistan, where clashes between Sunni and Shia tribes have resulted in at least 10 deaths and 21 injuries, despite a brokered ceasefire.
The Serena Hotel, a prominent landmark on Khyber Road in Peshawar, is the focal point of this alert. The advisory urges US citizens to avoid the hotel and surrounding areas during the warning period, emphasizing the possibility of imminent threats.
In addition to avoiding the hotel, US citizens are advised to:
- Rethink travel plans to KPK entirely.
- Monitor local media for updates on the situation.
- Review personal security measures.
- Be vigilant about surroundings and cooperate with local authorities.
The advisory states the precarious security environment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has been a hotbed for extremist activities for years. The region frequently witnesses bombings, assassinations, and insurgent attacks, with both locals and foreigners targeted. The US government’s heightened alert highlights the severity of the threat, urging Americans to prioritise safety and reconsider non-essential travel.
