Eknath Ranade was a visionary leader who was deeply dedicated to the cause of national integration, social upliftment, and the spiritual renaissance of India. Best known for his monumental work in establishing the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, Eknath Ranade’s life was a testament to selfless service, relentless determination, and an unwavering commitment to Swami Vivekananda’s ideals.
Early life and formative years
Eknath Ranade was born on November 19, 1914, in Timtala, a village in Amaravati District, Maharashtra. He belonged to a devout family, with his father, Ramakrishnarao Vinayak Ranade, working in the Great Indian Peninsular Railways. Eknathji, fondly called “Nath” during his childhood, moved to Nagpur in 1921 to stay with his eldest brother, where his early education took place at Government Primary School in Phadanavispura.
His life, however, took a significant turn in 1926 when he was introduced to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) by his brother-in-law, Annaji Sohoni, a close associate of Dr Hedgewar, the founder of RSS. This exposure ignited his passion for nationalism and social service, leading him to join the RSS as a full-time Pracharak in 1938.
A Journey with RSS and Swami Vivekananda’s ideals
Eknathji’s early work with the RSS was marked by his organisational brilliance and remarkable memory. After completing his LLB degree from Sagar University, he became an influential leader within the Sangh and was entrusted with key responsibilities in various regions, including Mahakoshal Pranta and Poorvanchal (North-East India).
In 1945, while continuing his work in the RSS, he began studying the Upanishads and Swami Vivekananda’s works. It was through these studies that he discovered his deep connection to Swami Vivekananda’s mission. Inspired by Vivekananda’s vision of a resurgent India, Eknath’s commitment to uplifting the nation’s spiritual and cultural identity grew stronger.
The visionary behind Vivekananda Rock Memorial
In 1963, Shri Eknath Ranade was given the responsibility of establishing the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari. This iconic project, which commemorated Swami Vivekananda’s visit to the rock in 1892, was a personal dream for Eknath. Despite initial challenges and opposition, his leadership turned the dream into a reality. The memorial, symbolising India’s rich spiritual heritage, was officially inaugurated in 1970.
Eknath’s meticulous organisational skills and tireless dedication were evident in his efforts. He worked relentlessly, writing over 25,000 letters throughout his tenure, galvanising support from across the nation and the world. His deep faith in the power of collective effort and his unwavering commitment to Swami Vivekananda’s ideals made the Vivekananda Rock Memorial not only a national symbol of spirituality but also an embodiment of India’s cultural revival.
Establishment of Vivekananda Kendra
Alongside the construction of the Rock Memorial, Eknath Ranade envisioned a living memorial dedicated to Swami Vivekananda’s ideals — the Vivekananda Kendra. The Kendra was conceived as a space for the holistic development of individuals, particularly focusing on the youth and the rural communities of India. The primary objective was to propagate Swami Vivekananda’s teachings on self-reliance, social service, and national integration.
Eknath’s strategic vision led to the establishment of Vivekananda Kendra in Kanyakumari, which became the headquarters of numerous activities focused on education, healthcare, rural development, and national service.
Challenges and Legacy
Despite his deteriorating health, Eknath Ranade never slowed down in his mission. His dedication remained undeterred, even after he suffered a stroke in 1980, which left him partially blind and with a compromised memory. He continued his work at a relentless pace until his untimely passing on 22nd August 1982, following a heart attack. Today, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands as a tribute to his leadership, and the Vivekananda Kendra continues to carry forward his legacy of service, education, and national pride.
