Makhana, also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, has long been a part of traditional Indian cuisine. This snack, often consumed during fasting periods, has recently gained attention in the health and wellness world due to its impressive nutritional profile. Packed with protein, fibre, and essential minerals, makhana is a tasty snack and a powerhouse of health benefits.

What is Makhana?

Makhana comes from the seeds of the Euryale Fox, a water plant found primarily in the wetlands of India. Traditionally, it has been used in both savoury and sweet dishes, especially during fasts or as a snack alternative. The seeds are harvested from the plant’s flowers, roasted, and then processed into a light, puffed, nut-like snack that is crunchy and delicious.

Health Benefits of Makhana

Rich in Protein

Makhana is an excellent source of plant-based protein. Just a handful of roasted makhana can provide a good amount of protein, making it a great option for vegetarians and vegans who are looking to meet their protein needs. Protein is essential for muscle building, tissue repair, and overall growth.

High in Fibre

Makhana is high in fibre, which helps promote healthy digestion. Consuming makhana regularly can help alleviate constipation, support gut health, and promote regular bowel movements. Fiber also helps you feel fuller for longer, making it a good option for weight management.

Packed with Antioxidants

Makhana is rich in antioxidants like flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which help fight off free radicals in the body. These antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties and contribute to better immune function, helping protect the body from chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Supports Heart Health

Makhana is low in sodium and contains high levels of potassium, both of which are essential for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. The high magnesium content in makhana also helps improve heart health by promoting proper blood circulation and reducing the risk of heart disease.

Boosts Bone Health

The mineral content in makhana, including calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, is beneficial for strengthening bones. It helps prevent bone-related diseases like osteoporosis and promotes overall bone health. Regular consumption of makhana can also aid in the prevention of bone degeneration, especially in the elderly.

Helps Control Blood Sugar Levels

Makhana has a low glycemic index, making it a great snack for those managing diabetes. It does not cause sharp spikes in blood sugar levels, and its high fibre content helps regulate glucose absorption, which aids in controlling blood sugar levels.

Improves Skin Health

Makhana is rich in flavonoids and antioxidants that can help improve skin health. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promotes collagen production, and gives the skin a natural glow. Regular consumption of makhana can help maintain youthful and healthy-looking skin.

Helps in Weight Management

Since makhana is low in calories and high in fibre, it’s a great addition to any weight-loss diet. The high fibre content promotes satiety, reduces hunger cravings, and helps control portions. As a low-calorie, nutrient-dense snack, it makes for a guilt-free munching option.
