PATNA: Tension escalated during the immersion procession of the murti of Maa Durga in Sitamarhi of Bihar after miscreants pelted stones on devotees late Saturday evening, October 12, injuring around 10 people including police personnel. The incident took place under the Belsund panchayat of Sitamarhi when the murti immersion procession was pelted with stones while it was crossing near the Registry Chowk area of Belsund.

According to the preliminary information received, the ruckus started when anti-social elements started pelting stones at the procession, eventually resulting in injuries to around a dozen people including policemen who were accompanying the crowd during the procession. The injured were later taken to the nearby health centre.

Following the stone pelting incident, a few miscreants allegedly vandalised as many as two shops in the area, which further escalated the situation. Acting on swiftly, the police then forcibly tried to carry forward the procession which in turn agitated the locals who were demanding action against those who pelted stones on the procession. The locals then reportedly left the idols at the Ghat and refused to take part in the immersion process.

Upon receiving information about the incident, senior officials of the police too reached the location and tried dissolving the dispute. Further, additional forces were also called and deployed in the area after which the immersion process was completed.

Meanwhile the police and the district administration while issuing a warning to those spreading misinformation later informed, that a rumour linked with burning of a religious scripture was being floated on social media which is untrue and strict action will be taken against those involved in such kind of rumor mongering.

Deployment of security personnel has been made in the area and the authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Further the identities of the miscreants involved in the incident are being ascertained with the help of drones, videography, and photography.
