NEW DELHI:  NITI Aayog, India’s central government think tank, is gearing up to release its comprehensive roadmap for the nation’s green energy transition and its journey toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions. The plan, expected to be unveiled next month, will outline key strategies and initiatives to shift towards sustainable energy sources.

BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, announced this development during the launch of the Telangana chapter of the Women Entrepreneurship Programme (WEP) on Tuesday. He highlighted the organisation’s efforts to support India’s climate goals, emphasising the roadmap’s role in leading the nation toward net-zero emissions by 2070.

The upcoming energy transition roadmap by NITI Aayog will prioritize creating a green transition ecosystem, focusing on “hard-to-abate” industries such as steel, cement, and petrochemicals. These sectors, known for their high emissions, are critical to India’s efforts to reduce carbon output. The roadmap will also promote circularity, aiming to recycle and reuse essential materials like lithium-ion batteries, electronic components, vehicles, and steel.

BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, underscored the significant growth potential within India’s industrial sector, revealing that 2.2 million workers have entered the workforce since the pre-COVID period. He noted a marked increase in gross value added (GVA) per worker, with annual emoluments rising by ₹70,000, resulting in an average total earning of ₹3.5 lakh per year.

Subrahmanyam emphasized that the forthcoming energy transition roadmap is poised to play a crucial role in achieving India’s ambitious target of 9% aspirational growth. By fostering sectoral development across various industries, the roadmap aims to enhance economic performance while simultaneously addressing environmental sustainability.

India is embarking on a complex yet crucial endeavor to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, seeking to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability. To meet this ambitious target, the country is implementing a comprehensive strategy that encompasses significant changes across various sectors, including energy production, industrial processes, transportation, and infrastructure development.

Key components of India’s plan include the expansion of renewable energy sources, improvements in energy efficiency, and the electrification of transport. Additionally, the strategy focuses on decarbonizing heavy industries and enhancing forest and land use management. The integration of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and supportive government policies will also play vital roles in facilitating this transition. Through these multifaceted efforts, India aims to pave the way for a sustainable future while maintaining robust economic growth.
