The beginning of an “Indian era” was declared by Salesforce Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff at the company’s annual Dreamforce event, which is being held from September 17-19 in San Francisco. In his keynote address, with Salesforce’s expanding footprint in the country positioned as a crucial driver of its future growth, India’s increasing influence in the global economy was emphasised.
Benioff highlighted Salesforce’s substantial investments in India, noting the growing demand for the company’s services in the region. The company, which is expected to close fiscal year 2025 with $38 billion in revenue, currently employs over 11,000 people in India. Many of these employees serve global clients, though rising local demand has been seen, particularly from major clients like the Bajaj Group.
The role of India as a technological hub for multinational companies was also underscored, with its young population, growing digital economy, and startup ecosystem recognised as drivers of global growth. Benioff’s remarks aligned with the broader industry trend of viewing India as a major player in future economic development.
Salesforce’s operations in India include engineering, support, and product development for both local and international markets. The leadership of Arundhati Bhattacharya, who heads the company’s Indian operations, was also praised, with her banking experience cited as key to Salesforce’s success in the region.
Although specific targets for further workforce expansion or revenue growth in India were not disclosed, Benioff’s comments reaffirmed the company’s commitment to making India a central part of its global strategy. The “Indian era” was described as a new phase of economic growth, with India expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of global industries.
Benioff also took the opportunity to praise Arundhati Bhattacharya, the former chairperson of the State Bank of India, who now heads Salesforce’s Indian operations. “Arundhati is an amazing leader,” he said, praising her for leading the company’s success in the region. Despite the rapid growth, Salesforce did not reveal specific expansion targets or plans to increase its workforce in India.
Salesforce introduced its latest AI-powered tool, ‘Agentforce,’ at the Dreamforce 2024 event, spotlighting its potential to revolutionise key business functions. The autonomous AI solution, designed to enhance areas such as sales, service, marketing, and commerce, was presented as a next-generation tool. Described by CEO Marc Benioff as surpassing traditional methods like co-pilots and chatbots, ‘Agentforce’ operates without human input, retrieving data, creating action plans, and executing tasks autonomously. Benioff compared the tool’s abilities to those of a self-driving car.
During the event, concerns over the impact of AI on jobs were addressed. While acknowledging the possibility of job losses, Benioff pointed to successful transitions within the company, where employees were moved into new roles, leading to growth. He emphasised that the overall impact of AI on employment would depend on how businesses manage the shift toward automation. The introduction of ‘Agentforce’ underlines Salesforce’s ongoing commitment to technological advancement, with India playing a critical role in the company’s broader global strategy.
