On August 29, junior doctors at Medinipur Medical College and Hospital staged a sit-in protest against ongoing harassment reportedly perpetrated by Mostafizur Rahman Mallick, a leader of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The demonstration highlights serious concerns about abuse and intimidation within the institution.

Allegations against Mostafizur Rahman Mallick

Mostafizur Rahman Mallick, an associate of Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is accused of engaging in harassment and ragging activities. According to allegations, Mallick has forcibly made junior female doctors perform dances to item songs and has been involved in various forms of intimidation.

Mohammed CB, one of the protesting doctors, revealed that despite Mostafizur graduating from Medinipur Medical College around three years ago, he continues to reside in the hostel and exert undue influence over junior doctors. “He harasses us relentlessly and threatens to expel us from the hostel,” Mohammed stated. “Whenever we threaten to file a complaint with the Health Department, he dismisses our concerns, saying that no action will be taken against him.”

Mohammed further accused Mallick of controlling critical aspects of student life, including seating arrangements during exams and failing students. “Mostafizur has even extorted ₹2,000 from each junior doctor and forcibly inducted us into the TMCP,” he added.

Student accounts of harassment

Shreya Mondal, a medical student, recounted her traumatic experiences to Republic TV. “From the very first day, we faced harassment. The teachers left the classroom, and Mostafizur’s associates entered and closed the doors, forcing us to endure ragging,” she said.

Mondal described a chilling episode where freshers were made to dance to item songs in front of an auditorium full of students. “Many juniors are threatened with becoming targets if they protest,” she said, emphasising the fear and intimidation experienced by students.

She further detailed the abusive behaviour, noting that women students were disrespected and publicly humiliated. “In the auditorium, students were subjected to humiliating treatment, including being forced to dance under harsh conditions. This environment is unacceptable and reminds us of the conditions at RG Kar if we continue to tolerate such behaviour.”

Administration’s response

In response to the protests, the administration of Medinipur Medical College and Hospital took swift action. A temporary ban was imposed on Mostafizur Rahman Mallick, prohibiting him from entering the college and hospital premises. Authorities have also provided a written assurance to address the grievances raised by the junior doctors.

The college principal addressed the situation, stating, “We are taking measures to improve security and surveillance. Additional CCTV cameras are being installed, and we have informed the health department. We are also enhancing safety protocols with increased police presence and revising the committees to include student representatives.”
