Former US President Donald Trump, in a statement that no US president has ever made in the nation’s 256-year history, boldly declared his unwavering support for the India and Hindus. “I am a big fan of Hindu and I am a big fan of India,” Trump proclaimed, setting a tone of profound respect and solidarity. He emphasised that, if elected, the Indian and Hindus would have a true friend in the White House. “I can guarantee you that,” Trump stated, emphasising his commitment to strengthening the ties between the United States and these communities.

Trump went on to highlight the immense contributions of Indian and Hindu Americans, noting how their values of hard work, education, and enterprise have significantly enriched the fabric of American society. “Generations of Indian and Hindu Americans have strengthened our country like few people could ever even believe,” he remarked, praising their dedication and influence.

However, Trump also stressed the importance of security as the foundation for prosperity, particularly in the context of the US-India relationship. He expressed gratitude for India’s role as a crucial ally in the global fight against radical Islamic terrorism. “We can’t have prosperity without security, and that is why we appreciate the great friend India has been to the United States in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism,” Trump said, acknowledging the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Earlier in 2022, in a speech delivered during a Diwali celebration organised by the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC) at his Mar-a-Lago resort, made a series of bold statements promising to elevate the relationship between the United States and India. Addressing a gathering of about 200 Indian-Americans, Trump highlighted his deep admiration for the Hindus and India, assuring them of a true friend in the White House if he is elected president in 2024.

Trump began his speech with a direct and heartfelt acknowledgment of the Indian and Hindus in the United States, calling himself a “big fan” of both. He emphasised the deep bond he has cultivated with these communities, crediting them with helping him secure victories in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. “We had support from the Hindu population, the great Hindu people both times,” Trump noted, stating the pivotal role Indian-Americans played in his electoral success, especially in key battleground states.

Trump’s connection with the Hindus has been evident throughout his political career. He has repeatedly praised the values of hard work, education, and enterprise that characterise the Indian diaspora, arguing that these values have been instrumental in the development and enrichment of the United States. “Generations of Indian and Hindu Americans have strengthened our country like few people could ever even believe,” Trump declared, recognising the community’s substantial contributions across various sectors.

During his address, Trump made a significant pledge: if elected president again, the Indian and Hindus would have a true ally in the White House. “I can guarantee you that,” Trump asserted, promising unwavering support and cooperation. This commitment, he suggested, would extend beyond mere diplomatic relations to a deeper, more personal partnership that recognises and respects the unique contributions of these communities to American society.

Trump’s admiration for India is not just cultural; it is also strategic. During his tenure, the Trump administration undertook significant steps to elevate the U.S.-India relationship, recognising India as a key player on the global stage. One of the most notable initiatives was the renaming of the Asia Pacific region to the Indo-Pacific, a move aimed at countering China’s growing influence and giving India a central role in the region’s geopolitical landscape.

“India was the only country for which the Trump administration came out with a 100-year plan,” Trump highlighted, emphasising the unique status India holds in U.S. foreign policy. This plan, he explained, was designed to foster long-term strategic cooperation between the two nations, covering areas from defense to economic growth. The Trump administration’s South Asia Policy also marked a significant shift, as it openly aligned with New Delhi’s position on terrorism, particularly regarding Pakistan’s role in fostering extremism. For the first time, a U.S. president acknowledged that terrorism emanating from Pakistan was a primary threat to regional stability, and Trump assigned India a crucial role in bringing peace to war-torn Afghanistan.

Trump’s speech also touched on the inseparable link between security and prosperity, particularly in the context of the U.S.-India relationship. He expressed gratitude for India’s steadfast partnership in combating radical Islamic terrorism, a global challenge that has united the two democracies. “We can’t have prosperity without security,” Trump stated, reinforcing the idea that strong bilateral ties are essential for both nations’ security and economic well-being.

The former president further promised to continue fostering this security partnership, emphasising that a strong, secure India is in America’s best interest. This sentiment was echoed in his broader foreign policy vision, which places a premium on alliances that contribute to global stability and counterterrorism efforts.

Beyond geopolitical strategy, Trump also addressed cultural and historical recognition during his speech. He fully endorsed the idea of constructing a Hindu Holocaust memorial in Washington, D.C., a proposal that has garnered significant support within the Hindus. “I think it’s time. We are going to get that done,” Trump affirmed, pledging to see the project through during his next term. This memorial would serve as a testament to the historical struggles faced by Hindus and as a symbol of the community’s resilience and contributions to global civilisation.

Trump’s promises of support to the Hindus and his vision for US India relations reflect a broader strategy of building strong, mutually beneficial partnerships with nations and communities that share America’s values of democracy, enterprise, and security. As the 2024 election approaches, these commitments may play a crucial role in shaping both domestic and foreign policy debates, highlighting the significance of the Indian and Hindus in America’s future.
