In a significant development in the ongoing legal and administrative actions in Ayodhya, a shopping complex owned by Moid Khan, a local Samajwadi Party (SP) leader accused of heinous rape, was demolished yesterday (August 22). The demolition, which commenced early Thursday, was completed over a span of five hours using heavy machinery including three JCB excavators and one Poclain machine.

Details of the Demolition

The complex, sprawling over 4,000 square feet and valued at approximately Rs 3 crore, was brought down under heavy security provided by four companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and additional local police forces. The administration justified the demolition by stating that the structure was illegally constructed on public land, specifically a pond and a road, without any approved building plans.

Background of the Case

Moid Khan, aged 65, faces allegations of gang-raping a 12-year-old girl, a case that surfaced on July 12, 2024. The gang-rape incident occurred in the Purwa Kalander police station area of Ayodhya. The accused recorded explicit videos of the victim and continued to blackmail her while engaging in further abuses. The case came to light on July 29, when the victim was found to be two months pregnant.

This incident not only shocked the local community but also drew attention from state authorities, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who personally addressed the issue in the state assembly.

The victim’s mother had filed a complaint against Moid Khan and his employee, Raju, but the police initially took no action. It was only after protests from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and Nishad Party that the police arrested Moid Khan and Raju.

The victim, who was found pregnant due to the assault, underwent an abortion, and her family has been under police protection with over 25 personnel stationed at their residence.

Legal and Political Implications

Moid Khan, a municipal president of the SP in Bhadasra and a close associate of SP MP Awadhesh Prasad, has been at the center of controversy. His properties have become focal points for legal action. Prior to yesterday’s demolition, another property, a bakery, was razed on August 3. This series of demolitions underscores the state government’s stance on illegal constructions and criminal activities.

Community Reaction and Security Measures

The area around the shopping complex was sealed off by the police, with significant local interest and presence at the site. Moid Khan’s son was also reported to be present during the demolition. The complex housed 23 shops, a bank, and a hall, making its demolition a significant event for local businesses and residents.

Victim’s Ordeal and Public Outcry

The victim, from a family struggling after the death of her father, was subjected to repeated abuse and blackmail by Khan and his employee Raju. The case only came to light after the victim was found pregnant, leading to protests by local groups like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, which pressured the police to take action.

The demolition marks a significant step in the legal proceedings against Moid Khan, reflecting the state’s resolve to address criminal activities and illegal constructions. The case continues to unfold, with further actions expected against Khan’s properties.
