In a heartwarming tale of grit, determination, and national pride, Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale etched his name in the annals of sports history. At the Paris Olympics 2024, Kusale clinched the bronze in the 50m rifle three positions event, marking the third medal for India in shooting at the games. This victory is particularly historic, as it is the first time India’s shooting squad has walked away with three Olympic medals.

The 28-year-old Kusale, who doubles as a full-time ticket collector, has just served us a vivid portrayal of the profound spirit that exists within India’s undervalued sports elite. Born on August 6, 1995, in the quiet village of Kambalwadi in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, Kusale’s journey to the top has been fraught with challenges.

Swapnil Kusale, who took home a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics 2024, has embarked upon a stellar journey that began on home ground, a remote farm in Kambalwadi. Launched into the world of sports by his father, Suresh Kusale, who introduced the budding athlete to the Maharashtra Government’s Krida Prabhodini sports program when he was merely a 14-year-old.

It was after a year of strenuous, intensive training that the young Kusale found his forte in the sport of shooting. The Kusale family’s commitment to Swapnil’s talent was uncompromised, evidenced by his early stay at government residential schools followed by his dedicated training in Pune, all while managing a demanding job as a Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) for the Indian Railways.

Swapnil’s first major accolade came in 2015 with a gold at the Asian Shooting Championships in the 50m rifle prone 3 positions event, coinciding with a milestone win at the National Championships in Kerala. The same year, another significant event happened in Kusale’s life with him getting a job as a ticket collector at the Indian railways, a journey that reflected that of MS Dhoni’s from a ticket collector to a champion cricketer.

Prior to his employment, Swapnil and other professional shooters relied on a common rifle for practice. This issue was addressed when the Maharashtra Government stepped in to provide him with a rifle, yet undeterred, the dedicated athlete saved his salary for months and bought his very first rifle, a significant step towards his shining career.

One of the defining moments in Swapnil’s sporting career was when he won a bronze medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Championships in Brisbane. His prowess and persistence were further underscored by gold medals at the 2021 ISSF Shooting World Cup and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, respectively. Even setbacks, such as a fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Championships in Cairo and a fifth-place showing at the trials, did dent his indomitable spirit.

Swapnil’s journey embodies the true spirit of perseverance, resonating far and beyond the confines of his humble origins. His dual life as a ticket collector and a passionate shooter highlights the immense challenges he faced and his unyielding determination. Despite the constraints of juggling his job duties and rigorous training, Swapnil achieved what many only dream of – Olympic accolades. His bronze medal victory in the 50m rifle prone event at the Paris Olympics 2024 underscores an inspiring tale of overcoming odds.
