Chennai: In a disturbing incident, a dental practitioner, Dr. Abdul Majeed, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at his clinic in Pudukottai town, Tamil Nadu. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of patients, particularly young girls, in medical settings.

According to reports and social media posts, the victim and her mother visited Dr. Abdul Majeed’s dental clinic on July 28. After examining the girl, the dentist instructed her mother to purchase some medicines from a nearby pharmacy located approximately four kilometers away. Seizing this opportunity, it is alleged that Dr. Abdul Majeed sexually assaulted the girl while her mother was away.

The girl managed to send a distress call to her mother, informing her about the incident. Upon receiving the message, the mother rushed back to the clinic and confronted Dr. Abdul Majeed. Realizing the severity of the situation, she immediately filed a police complaint with the all-women police station.

Following the complaint, the police conducted an investigation and subsequently arrested Dr. Abdul Majeed on July 29. He has been charged under relevant sections of the POCSO Act, which is specifically designed to protect children from sexual offenses.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. In 2022, a 70-year-old doctor was arrested for a similar offense in Ramanathapuram. The repetitive occurrence of such cases highlights the need for a thorough reevaluation of existing laws and regulations to ensure the safety and protection of vulnerable individuals.

The public has expressed their concern and called for stricter implementation of laws to combat the rising number of sexual assault cases.
