Guwahati: One of the brave battles waged by the Indian Armed Forces in the incredibly hostile, high-altitude terrain of Jammu & Kashmir in 1999 was the Kargil War. Even in this day and age, the nation as a whole is inspired by the valour and sacrifices made by our armed forces in the face of overwhelming adversity. Every year on July 26, the nation commemorates this crucial victory as Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day meant to revive the pride and bravery of the men who fought Pakistan in Operation Vijay.
The Kargil War is commemorating its 25th anniversary this year, and a number of activities have been organised in the lead-up to the main celebration, Rajat Mahotsav of Kargil Vijay Diwas, which is scheduled for July 26, 2024.
An ‘All Women Motorbike Rally’ was one such event that Headquarters Uniform Force organised. It was scheduled to go from Leh to Kargil, passing via the world’s highest motorable passes, Khardung La and Umling La. The route took participants through the rugged terrain of Ladakh. This has been a fitting homage to the unwavering spirit of the Indian soldier and a salute to the Nari Shakti, who has dispelled myths about men dominating adventure sports and demonstrated the unmatched bravery, commitment, determination, and devotion of women in the Indian Armed Forces.
The 25-strong women’s rally team, which rode around India, was mostly made up of military spouses, serving women officers, and other ranks. Over the course of sixteen days, the rally was held, starting at the Leh War Memorial and ending at the Kargil War Memorial. The riders stopped at five significant Ladakh memorials along the way to honour the martyrs: the Hall of Fame in Leh, the Siachen War Memorial, the Rezang La War Memorial in Chushu, the Trishul War Memorial in Karu, and the Kargil War Memorial. The world’s two highest motorable passes, Khardung La (18,380 feet) and Umling La (19,300 feet), were also accessible to the female riders. Together with the Indian Army several public organisations organised the bike rally to honour the valiant warriors of the Kargil War, demonstrating their unwavering respect.
