US Presidential Polls 2024: Democrats urge Biden to quit race citing ‘dearth’ of public trust, frail health

Post the US Presidential Debate debacle against Republican Donald Trump and the subsequent erosion of his worthiness, meagre knowledge and public trust, coupled with old age medical conditions, many Democratic Senators have advised Joe Biden to drop out of the election race, only to meet Biden’s stern refusal to adhere pleas

As the US Presidential Elections gain momentum, Peter Welch, on July 11, 2024, became the first Democrat senator to publicly call Biden Joe Biden to drop his re-election bid as concerns rise over his age and fitness. “For the good of the country, I am calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race, the Vermont senator said in an opinion piece of a US based newspaper.

Apart from Peter Welch, many other Democrats also challenged Joe Biden to provide convincing evidence of a viable path to re-election after his failed debate performance, bad battleground state polling and growing concerns that he cannot defeat former US President and Republican Donald Trump in the presidential elections, a US based media reported.

Some of the democratic leaders questioned Joe Biden’s ability to win the re-elections after a disappointing debate performance and poor poll numbers in key states. They are calling on Biden to show a clear path to victory against his likely opponent Donald Trump, in the upcoming elections.

Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, who was a 2020 presidential candidate said that he no longer had the confidence that Joe Biden could actually defeat Trump. Mike Quigley, another Illinois Congressman said that Biden’s legacy is set, but it was time “someone else do this.” Adam Smith of Washington, the Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee said that Biden no longer clearly articulate and strongly make his case to the American people.

However, Biden has vowed that he will be running this race to the end of the November Elections and despite private calls from Democrats to dropout Biden stood firm and told the Congressional Democrats in a letter on July 10, 2024 that he would continue his election bid despite mounting concerns about his mental fitness. Biden said, he would be running again, if I did not absolutely believe that I could defeat Donald Trump.

“I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in the race to running this race to the end and to beating Donald Trump,” he added. Further, he also stated, “We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election,” Biden said in the letter distributed by his re-election campaign.

In the letter, Biden also calls for unity among the party emphasising the needs for collective efforts to defeat former President Donald Trump, in the upcoming election. “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It is time to come together, move forward as a unified party and defeat Donald Trump,” said Biden.
