Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform ‘X’ to honour the legacy of Swami Vivekananda, stating, “I pay homage to Swami Vivekananda on his Punya Tithi. His teachings give strength to millions. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute on ‘X’, recognising Vivekananda as a beacon for the youth who spread the light of Indian culture and philosophy globally. “Tribute to Swami Vivekananda, the inspiration for the youth who illuminated the entire world with the light of Indian culture and philosophy, on his Nirvana Day,” Shah wrote. He emphasised Vivekananda’s role in universalising Sanatan culture and reviving Indian philosophy through his landmark Chicago World Religion Council address. Shah highlighted Vivekananda’s establishment of the Ramakrishna Math, Mission, and Vedanta Society as a significant contribution to promoting Indian knowledge traditions and patriotism among the youth.

Swami Vivekananda, born Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, was a key figure in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. As the chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna Paramhans, Vivekananda played a pivotal role in popularising Indian culture and Hindu philosophy globally. His famous speech at the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, beginning with “Sisters and brothers of America,” remains a landmark in interfaith dialogue and promoting Hinduism as a major world religion.

India commemorates Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary as ‘National Youth Day’ on January 12, celebrating his enduring influence on the country’s youth. Vivekananda passed away on July 4, 1902, at 39, but his legacy inspires millions worldwide.

Swami Vivekananda’s life and teachings remain a cornerstone of modern Indian nationalism. He advocated spiritualism, patriotism, and Vedanta’s values. His contributions to interfaith awareness and the global recognition of Hinduism have left an indelible mark on history, and his messages of self-culture and self-religion continue to guide generations.
