Guwahati: The devastating floods in Assam have claimed six more lives, bringing the total death toll to 38. The state’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reported a slight improvement in the flood situation, but the impact remains severe.

“Flooding has affected 28 districts and a population of 1,134,446 across 2,208 villages,” CM Sarma stated. The floods have damaged crop areas spanning 42,476.18 hectares, destroyed 52 bridges, and caused breaches in embankments at eight locations. Additionally, around 922 roads have been damaged, and there are approximately 130 relief camps in operation.

CM Sarma highlighted the extensive efforts being made to manage the disaster. “Several battalions of NDRF and SDRF are working tirelessly. We have sought assistance from the Indian Air Force where necessary. A comprehensive damage assessment will be carried out, and relief will be provided to the affected people by August 15,” he assured.

The chief minister further detailed plans for government ministers to visit different districts and stay for three days to assess the damage. “I will be visiting Barak Valley for a couple of days. By September-October, we will allocate funds for the damaged infrastructure and aim to complete repairs by March next year,” Sarma added.

Manipur Also Hit by Floods

In neighbouring Manipur, the flood situation has led to office closures on 3rd July. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh visited flood-affected areas in Imphal city, interacting with rescue workers and affected families. CM Singh emphasised the government’s proactive measures to support affected families and prepare for potential future challenges.

The Meteorological Centre, IMD Imphal, has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next five days, exacerbating concerns. Manipur Water Resources and Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai noted that major rivers are still flowing above flood levels, making the state vulnerable to further flooding.

“A few days of rain upstream can prolong the flood situation. I appeal to the people to remain vigilant,” Newmai urged. He reported that over 2,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations and relief camps as a precaution.
