Lok Sabha Polls: Expansionist TMC chief Mamata Banerjee eyes Hindi belt, turns ‘thorn’ for Congress

Aiming to enlarge her party base outside her home state of West Bengal and keeping a hawk’s eye on entering the Hindi speaking states of North India along with convening the INDIA alliance in the post Lok Sabha 2024 poll landscape, the highly ambitious Trinamool Congress leader (TMC) Mamata Banerjee is now determined not to give any political space to the Congress Party

The Congress party’s arrogance is going to cost it dearly in coming days at all levels. The Congress party won 99 Lok Sabha seats and got the position of Leader of Opposition after a gap of 10 years. The Congress party was not able to win 54 seats in 2014 and 2019 which is the minimum requirement for any party to become the main Opposition.

During election and seat sharing the Congress party was completely sidelined by its allies. In Punjab, Kerala and in West Bengal the Congress party was not even considered for seat allocation even when these parties were part of larger INDI Alliance. In Kerala the Communists and the Congress party contested against each other even though these parties were allies in Tripura, West Bengal and even in other States too.

Mamata Banerjee was not spared even winning two seats of the Congress party in her State for the Congress party. The Congress party won Maldaha Dakshin and Baharampur Lok Sabha seats in 2019 but in this election Mamata Banerjee even did not bother to negotiate with the Congress party on these seats. Mamata Banerjee was adamant to defeat Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Leader of the Congress party in 17th Lok Sabha at any cost.

Mamata Banerjee brought an outsider who was at time of declaration of his candidature perhaps not member of her party to ensure Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury defeat and Mamata Banerjee succeed in her this mission too. Not only in her home State of West Bengal but also in States of Assam and Meghalaya Mamata Banerjee had put her candidates against the Congress party candidates too. While in Uttar Pradesh the INDI Alliance of Samajwadi Party and the Congress party gave Bhadohi seat to Mamata Banerjee’s party.

Mamata Banerjee demonstrated through her such acts that she is in no mood to give any leverage to the Congress party or Rahul Gandhi in coming days. For long Mamata Banerjee was looking for her own candidate against Narendra Modi for the Prime Ministerial position. Now in post poll scenario Mamata Banerjee has no big role in INDI Alliance.

Virtually Mamata Banerjee wants to be the convenor of the INDI Alliance in the post-poll scenario. Mamata Banerjee wants to lead the INDI Alliance outside Parliament. Mamata Banerjee is eyeing to expand her party base outside her State and for that she contested on her own in Meghalaya and in Assam by going against the INDI Alliance.

Mamata Banerjee had given tickets to two seasoned politicians from Bihar Shatrughan Sinha and Kirti Azad and both won their seats. Mamata Banerjee is eying to enter into Hindi speaking belt through her these steps.
