The seventy-six-year-old woman, a Krishnapuram native, is reported to have been brutally raped in Kayamkulam, Alappuzha district. She was living alone in her house. She is now undergoing treatment at Alappuzha Medial College owing to serious injuries. The accused Shahaz (25), an Ochira native, was arrested by the police based on CCTV visuals.

The incident took place around 8 pm on June 27. The accused hid near the old woman’s house. When she opened the door for something, the accused entered the house and inhumanly raped her. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. He is reported to be a habitual offender having a case registered against him for sexually abusing another elderly woman in the very same Kayamkulam. Investigation is going on in connection with the incident. He has a criminal track record of multiple cases including drug trafficking. He was in jail for four years in connection with a drug trafficking case.

Shahaz hid near the border of the village after committing the crime. Police informed that the accused would be taken to the place of crime for collecting the evidence.

In Kerala, these sorts of cases have become a usual phenomena. Women of all ages and from five to six  year old girls have been facing and undergoing  these sorts of sexual assaults since the last several years. But, there are allegations that in several cases, no impartial action is in the vicinity.

The accused in two POCSO cases, one in  Vandiperiyar in Idukki district and another in Walayar in Palakkad district, scraped through.  Both BJP and opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) have been alleging that in both cases, the accused enjoyed favourable CPM interference. In Vandiperiyar case, a six year old scheduled caste minor girl was raped and killed. In Walayar POCSO cases two scheduled caste sisters, 13 and 9 year old, were found hanging in their one room house 52 days apart.
