Guwahati: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, while attending a regional conference of vice-chancellors on 28 June in the city, commented that the 21st century’s first education policy (National Education Policy 2020) aims to comprehensively reform Bharat’s education system from primary to higher education levels. Aiming at value-based education, skill development and integration of digital technology, NEP 2020 promises to usher in a new era of educational excellence, he added.
Addressing the vice-chancellors of north-eastern and eastern zone on implementation of NEP 2020, which was organized by Pragjyotishpur University in collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), Guv Kataria also stated that a nation’s future depends on the ability to provide quality higher education to its youths. So the Union government introduced and subsequently implemented NEP 2020 to provide more inclusive, holistic and quality education.
“This is a policy made for the future, which will promote the human resources development and progress of the nation. Hence everyone needs to work with full dedication for the implementation and adaptation of NEP 2020,” said Kataria, adding that the aim of education in ancient India was not only the acquisition of knowledge, but also the complete realization and liberation of the self.

The world-class ancient Indian institutions like Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramshila, Vallabhi, etc set the highest standard of teaching and research across diverse disciplines and host scholars and students from across the globe. It is important that this tradition is respected and the rich academic heritage is propagated. He advocated for an Indian knowledge system centre in every university and higher educational institution with an aim to revive India’s vitality in education.
Kataria also pointed out that to implement the new education policy, the universities need to focus on education and research in cutting edge technical areas. He added that researchers should pay special attention to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary dimensions with a scope of addressing relevant issues grappling with the present society. He assured that the government is committed to the successful implementation of NEP 2020.
In the last few years, Raj Bhavan and State education department organized several conferences to reorient the stakeholders of the NEP for its impactful rollout. In presence of Meghalaya education minister RA Sangma, UGC chairman Prof Jagadesh Kumar, Pragjyotishpur University vice-chancellor Prof SK Sinha, PU registrar Prof Joesh Kakati along with a host of dignitaries, Guv Kataria expressed hope that the conference will provide a platform for exchange of ideas & experiences as well as learning & sharing for the acclaimed participants.
