West Bengal: NIA foils escape bid, tracks former TMC MLA Saokat Molla through third-party mobile network

A failed border escape, a covert communication channel, and a carefully coordinated intelligence operation culminated in the arrest of former TMC MLA Saokat Molla near Kolkata. Investigators say a compromised third-party mobile phone provided the crucial breakthrough that helped the NIA trace the fugitive's movements and bring him into custody

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Saokat Molla after what investigators describe as a failed attempt to evade law enforcement through a cross-border escape route. The arrest, carried out near Kolkata following an intensive intelligence-led operation, marks the culmination of a high-stakes pursuit involving multiple central agencies, border surveillance units, and advanced technical tracking methods.

According to reports, the breakthrough came not through conventional surveillance but through a compromised communication channel that investigators were able to identify and monitor. The channel allegedly involved the use of a mobile phone belonging to a third party, which the fugitive was reportedly using to remain in contact with family members while avoiding direct electronic detection.

The operation began on June 4, after the NIA received what officials described as credible and actionable intelligence indicating that Saokat Molla, accompanied by an unidentified associate, was actively attempting to leave India through a border route. The information immediately triggered a coordinated response from central security agencies.

Recognising the possibility that the former legislator could disappear across an international border, the NIA swiftly alerted the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies stationed at key transit and border locations. Surveillance measures were intensified, movement patterns were monitored, and checkpoints across sensitive stretches were placed on heightened alert.

Investigators believe that the suspect soon became aware that security agencies had increased vigilance along potential escape corridors. Faced with the prospect of interception at the border, he allegedly abandoned the escape plan and retreated from the area.

Rather than attempting another immediate crossing, officials say Molla moved into hiding at a location on the outskirts of Kolkata, hoping to evade the expanding search operation. However, what appeared to be a successful disappearance would soon unravel because of his continued need to communicate with family members and associates.

As the manhunt intensified, intelligence officers focused on identifying possible communication channels being used by the fugitive. Investigators suspected that Molla was avoiding the use of his own devices and relying instead on indirect methods to maintain contact with trusted individuals.

During questioning of persons believed to be connected to the former MLA, officials reportedly discovered that he was routing calls through a mobile phone registered to another individual. This revelation proved to be a significant breakthrough in the investigation.

Reports indicated that the NIA subjected several individuals within the suspect’s network to extensive questioning. Through these interrogations, investigators were able to identify the specific communication link being used and establish a clearer picture of the fugitive’s movements.

Once the communication channel was identified, technical teams began analysing call patterns, location data, and movement indicators associated with the device. Investigators were then able to reconstruct portions of Molla’s movements and determine how he was changing locations while attempting to remain hidden.

Officials say the intelligence gathered from the compromised mobile network allowed them to track the suspect in near real time. As Molla allegedly moved between safe locations, investigators continuously monitored his movements and narrowed the search area.

The operation entered its final phase when agencies received information suggesting that the former MLA was attempting to move back toward Kolkata. Surveillance teams were deployed at strategic points, and central agencies coordinated their efforts to prevent another escape attempt.

The pursuit ultimately ended when NIA officials intercepted and apprehended Molla while he was allegedly attempting to re-enter the Kolkata region. The arrest brought an end to a search operation that had stretched from border areas to urban hideouts and relied heavily on intelligence gathering and technical surveillance.

Following the arrest, the former legislator was taken into federal custody. Investigators are now focused on examining the network of individuals who may have assisted him during the period he remained underground.

Officials are reportedly seeking answers to several questions, including who facilitated his movements, who provided shelter, and whether a broader support structure existed to help him evade arrest. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the failed border escape attempt and the role played by the unidentified associate who was reportedly travelling with him.

The arrest is being viewed within security circles as an example of how modern investigations increasingly rely on digital footprints and communication intelligence. Even when suspects avoid using their own devices, investigators often attempt to identify alternative channels that can reveal movement patterns and contact networks.

In this case, officials believe that the use of a third-party mobile phone, intended to shield the fugitive from detection, ultimately became the key vulnerability that exposed his location. Once investigators identified the communication link, the suspect’s efforts to remain hidden became significantly more difficult.

The NIA has not publicly disclosed the full details of the technical methods employed during the operation. However, officials indicated that intelligence analysis, field surveillance, and inter-agency coordination played critical roles in the successful conclusion of the manhunt.

With Molla now in custody, investigators are expected to continue questioning him and examining digital evidence gathered during the operation. The focus is likely to remain on identifying logistical support networks, understanding the planning behind the attempted escape, and determining whether additional individuals may face scrutiny as the investigation progresses.
