The National Testing Agency (NTA) is embroiled in controversy following a series of alleged paper leaks and irregularities in its public examinations, leading to the dismissal of its chief, Subodh Kumar. The Union government announced Kumar’s dismissal on the evening of June 22, appointing IAS officer Pradeep Singh Kharola as the interim chief of the NTA.

In recent weeks, the NTA has faced intense scrutiny over allegations of paper leaks and other misconduct during major examinations like NEET, UGC-NET, and CSIR-UGC-NET. The union government has responded by forming a panel to investigate the NTA’s operations and the activities of its top members.

The move to sack Kumar comes shortly after the government set up a committee tasked with recommending improvements for the agency’s functioning. This decision also coincides with a planned retest for around 1,500 NEET-UG students who were previously awarded grace marks, scheduled for the following day.

Additionally, the CSIR-UGC-NET exam, which was set to take place from June 25 to June 27, was postponed on June 21 due to “logistical reasons.” Similarly, the NEET-PG exam, originally scheduled for Sunday, was rescheduled late on Saturday.

Sources have indicated that persistent allegations of exam leaks and the resulting inconvenience and frustration among students have undermined Kumar’s position.  Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has previously mentioned a comprehensive overhaul of the NTA, and sources report that Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed Pradhan to take action during a recent Cabinet meeting. This crackdown is seen as the beginning of that promised overhaul.

The government’s actions aim to restore credibility to the NTA and address the significant concerns raised by students and educators alike. Further announcements and changes are expected as the newly formed committee begins its review and makes its recommendations.
