Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has issued a scathing critique of the state’s ruling party, the DMK, asserting that Chennai has descended into a “city of murders” under their administration. In a statement and through posts on social media platform X, Annamalai highlighted a series of recent violent incidents, blaming the DMK’s governance for the deteriorating law and order situation.
Annamalai’s comments come amid growing concerns over the rise in various crimes in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the past three years have seen an alarming increase in murders, crimes against women and children, drunken brawls, robberies, chain snatchings, thefts, and the availability of narcotic drugs.
“Under the DMK rule, Chennai has become a murder city. It’s their three-year record with rising murders, crimes against women and children, drunken brawls, robberies, and drug availability,” Annamalai stated. “Hardly a day passes without news of crimes, murders, and robberies across the state. The situation has worsened, especially for children, women, and the elderly.”
Citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau, Annamalai accused Chief Minister MK Stalin, who also holds the home portfolio, of being disconnected from the reality of the state’s crime situation. “CM Stalin, responsible for the police department, seems oblivious to the escalating crimes. It raises doubts about whether he is informed by his officials or follows the media,” he remarked.
Annamalai painted a grim picture of Chennai, describing it as a hub of revenge murders. “Murders are happening in busy thoroughfares, public areas, near schools, colleges, and even police stations. No part of the state is safe. Youngsters, influenced by drugs like ganja, are committing crimes without understanding their gravity,” he said.
The BJP leader underscored a recent incident involving the attack on Srinivasan, the husband of the BJP state general secretary of the Mahila wing, Nathiya. Srinivasan was attacked by a gang in broad daylight near the Deputy Police Commissioner’s office in Anna Nagar on June 15. “This attack, in broad daylight, near a police office, shows that the police, under CM Stalin’s control, have become dysfunctional,” Annamalai argued.
Annamalai also highlighted three murders that occurred in Chennai on June 14 as evidence of the failing law and order situation. “The three murders on June 14th show that law and order in Tamil Nadu is on its deathbed,” he declared.
Expressing his frustration with the police’s focus on political vendettas, Annamalai said, “The intelligence police department is used only for vendetta politics against opposition parties, allowing crime to increase. People can’t trust the police anymore. They arrest BJP and opposition social media activists at midnight, neglecting their role in tackling crime and drugs.”
Annamalai’s statements reflect a growing discontent with the DMK’s handling of crime and public safety. The BJP leader’s remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing political debate over law and order in Tamil Nadu, adding pressure on the DMK government to address these concerns more effectively.

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has fiercely criticized the ruling DMK government, labeling its three-year tenure as an “anarchist rule” incapable of controlling crime and drug addiction. In a series of statements, Annamalai accused the DMK of using its police machinery to target opposition critics on social media, rather than addressing the rampant increase in criminal activities and public safety concerns.
Annamalai highlighted several recent incidents to underscore the worsening law and order situation in Chennai. On June 15, six people surrendered at Nolambur police station in connection with the daylight attack on Srinivasan, husband of Nathiya, the state general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha. The attack occurred in the busy Anna Nagar area on June 14, raising alarm about public safety even in bustling parts of the city.
“During the DMK’s anarchist rule, crime rates and drug addiction have surged manifold. The government, instead of curbing these issues, misuses the police and intelligence wings to target opposition voices on social media,” Annamalai stated. He argued that the misuse of law enforcement resources has left the public feeling unsafe and skeptical about the police’s ability to protect them. “CM Stalin seems oblivious to these realities, relying on written reports and living in a dream world. Someone needs to wake him up to the dire law and order situation,” he added.
Further illustrating his point, Annamalai cited the arrest of 12 associates of gangster Arumbakkam Radhakrishnan. The Chennai city police, acting on a tip-off, seized five knives from the gang members, who were allegedly planning to kill an advocate and others. These arrests, made at gunpoint, reflect the severe threat posed by organized crime in the city.

In another incident, a juvenile girl and her husband were apprehended for stealing cash from a petrol bunk on her first day of work, showcasing the desperation and criminal tendencies fueled by socio-economic issues.
Annamalai also referred to a series of gangland murders that occurred within 48 hours. On June 11, lawyer Gautam was hacked to death by a gang led by Kamalesh in Thiruvanimyur. This murder followed the killings of Dharma at Korukkupet, P. Raasaiya in Thiruvottiyur, and Dinesh in Korukkupet. The police have arrested several suspects but are still searching for others involved. These incidents have intensified concerns about the city’s deteriorating safety.
Annamalai’s comments extended beyond Chennai. He criticized the DMK’s handling of Coimbatore, suggesting that the recent Mupperum Vizha event only resulted in increased waste in the city, reflecting poor governance.

In Pudukottai, an illegal sand miner attempted to kill Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Dheivanayaki of Illupur sub-division, her driver M. Kanaga Pandian, and office assistant Rajenderen by ramming their car on June 13.
The incident occurred when Dheivanayaki, upon hearing reports of illegal sand mining, rushed to the site in a rented car. As they chased the truck involved in the mining operation and tried to stop it, the truck driver reversed and attempted to hit the RDO’s car. “I managed to drive the car in another direction and avoided the hit. If I had not turned my vehicle, we would have died,” said Kanaga Pandian. The truck’s occupants threatened to kill them if they tried to intervene.
In another incident in Ranipet, an ex-serviceman killed his friend following a drunken brawl on June 14, adding to the series of violent events troubling the state.
On June 16, Coimbatore police arrested four individuals who were part of a gang that waylaid a Kerala-bound car and attempted to attack three passengers with weapons on the Salem–Kochi highway in the early hours of June 14. It is alleged that the gang members, dressed in red and black attire, were returning from a DMK function in Coimbatore. Critics claim that it is common for DMK cadres to cause disturbances and demand free services from eateries, wine shops, and other vendors after party events.
Tamil Nadu BJP’s social media wing functionary Karthik Gopinath criticized the DMK government, sarcastically remarking on the state’s deteriorating law and order situation. He highlighted the irony of such crimes occurring in Coimbatore, where Chief Minister MK Stalin had recently celebrated his electoral success.
