Andhra Pradesh: Formidable alliance ends Jagan’s reign

The 'Double engine' sarkar in Andhra Pradesh has everything to gain, as the opposition is highly marginalised in the State. For Andhra, the next five years are crucial, and under PM Modi and Naidu's leadership, the State has a good chance to make significant strides forward

People of Andhra Pradesh dethroned YS Jaganmohan Reddy Government and reposed their complete trust in N Chandrababu Naidu led TDP -Janasena -BJP Kootami/ alliance with a historic mandate of 164 seats out of 175, leaving YSRCP with just 11 seats in Assembly.

In addition to Assembly elections, parliamentary elections were held on the same day, benefitting the alliance between the State and NDA at the centre. The people of Andhra Pradesh are poised to play a critical role in national politics, represented by N Chandrababu Naidu; it is said that he has become king in Andhra Pradesh and a kingmaker in the NDA alliance in Delhi. It’s important to see what worked out positively for TDP -Janasena- BJP kootami and what went wrong for YSRCP in AP.

Anti-Hindu Mindset

Demolition of important temples, a series of desecration of temples, burning of temple chariots by unknown persons in several places, including in Antarvedi, vandalisation of Murthis in other places, the brutal cutting down of the head of Bhagwan Srirama on a hillock in the ancient Ramateertham temple in Vizianagaram district left people desolated and inconsolable. The sudden removal of Sri Ashok Gajapathi Raju, a descendant of Vizianagaram samsthanam, from the hereditary trusteeship of the famous Sri Varaha Narasimha Swamy temple in Simhachalam by violating all customary norms enraged the people.

The appointment of Karunakar Reddy, allegedly a Christian, and later Dharma Reddy belonging to the YS Jaganmohan Reddy family, as the chairpersons of the famous Vaishnava temple, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) board the failure to remove Christian employees from their jobs at TTD; the misappropriation of TTD funds; and putting up of many obstacles in TTD including high-priced darshan tickets by TTD distressed the devotees and many had to reconsider whether they wanted to visit the temple. Voters’ perceptions regarding TTD funding going to government-run municipalities had gradually begun to shift their decision-making.

Major festivals like Dussehra, Deepawali, Srirama Navami, Ugadi, etc., are confined to temples and are no longer the community celebrations that they were in Andhra Pradesh until recently. Contrary to the popular Telugu saying that there is no village in Andhra Pradesh without a Ramalayam, now even tiny villages have massive churches. Christain gatherings like ‘Suvartha’, ‘Swasthatha’, and other congregations big and small being conducted across the State throughout the year have become a common sight, breaking the social fabric and widening the gap between Christian, mostly crypto Christians and non-Christians.

Financial Crisis

Investments in the State have pulled out, and the once fast-growing State, which boasted a growth rate of 10.22 per cent in 2019, has now plummeted to a negative growth rate of -1.8 per cent. The Jaganmohan Reddy Government borrowed money for unproductive schemes rather than for producing assets. According to RBI estimates, by the conclusion of the current fiscal year 2023–24, the State’s total debt is expected to exceed 4.85 lakh crores. This amount includes only government borrowings, whereas market borrowings are not included. It has been noted that the Andhra Pradesh Government of Jaganmohan Reddy obtained loans totalling Rs 6.38 lakh crores by the end of the fiscal year 2022–2023. According to TDP, the total borrowings by 2023 were approximately Rs 8.52 lakh crore in Off Budget Borrowings (OBB) and Open Market Borrowings (OMB). The Central Government’s FRBM Act guidelines were reportedly violated by Jaganmohan Reddy’s Government. According to reports, the AP state government mortgaged a number of government assets in order to raise money.

Political Vendetta

The arrest of Chandrababu Naidu and several TDP ex-ministers in the earlier years by the YSRCP govt had severely dented their political prospects. Moreover, the YSRCP Government’s CID dept arrested their own sitting rebel MP Raghuramakrishna Raju and beaten him black and blue for daring to speak the truth in Loksabha, regarding the rampant Christian conversions, which have reportedly crossed 25 per cent, thus changing the State’s demographics. (The church pastors and agencies have claimed on record a few years ago that the largely crypto-Christian population in the State has crossed 35 per cent).

Political Arrogance

YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s leadership style has been characterised by a strong centralisation of power. Decisions were often made unilaterally, with little consultation or input from other stakeholders, including opposition parties and civil society. This approach had created an environment where dissenting voices were marginalised, and constructive criticism was often ignored.

The foul-mouthed press conferences by YSRCP leaders, particularly KodaliNani, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, Ambati Rambabu, and RK Roja, had greatly contributed to the deteriorating political culture and debate in the State. The normalisation of abusive language and personal attacks in political discourse set a dangerous precedent, encouraging similar behaviour across the political spectrum and in public life. The people showed their disgust in voting YSRCP out.

To sum up, after the landslide victory by the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP Kootami/alliance, Andhra Pradesh is now firmly with the Kootami and will receive Central support from NDA. Chandrababu Naidu has a unique opportunity to live up to the high expectations of people and display effective leadership when navigating through political and social challenges.
