In a significant development reported from Chhattisgarh, security forces tasted major success after they eliminated seven Maoists in an encounter that took place on Friday, June 7.
The exchange of fire took place between Mungedi and Govel villages near the inter-district border of Dantewada, Kondagaon and Narayanpur, all Maoist affected districts of the state, following a joint team of security forces launching a combing operation into the area on Thursday night.
According to the preliminary information received, a counter-insurgency drive comprising of around 1000 personnel of District Reserve Guards (DRG) of Kondagaon, Jagdalpur, Narayanpur , Dantewada and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was launched in the area during which an intense gun fight broke out between the Maoist and the security personnel near Mungedi and Govel.
At least 7 Maoists in uniforms have been killed in the action while a few more are suspected to have sustained grave injuries. Three personnel of DRG have been also wounded during the exchange of fire which lasted for several hours. The injured personnel have been airlifted to Raipur and are reported to be out of danger.
The joint team have recovered bodies of all the Maoist neutralised in the gunfight and a search operation is still underway in the area. The identities of those killed in the action are being ascertained.

Hailing the development, Deputy Chief Minister of the state, Vijay Sharma while taking to X, said that “This is a big achievement for our soldiers, I salute their valour and courage. Three personnel of DRG have been injured in the attack, I wish for their speedy recovery.”
Forces Intensifies Operations in the Maoist stronghold
Notably, this is overall the fifth such operation launched by the security forces in the stronghold of Maoists in a span of last two and a half months alone resulting in a major success again.
Earlier in a similar operation launched by the personnel of Bastar Fighters and Special Task Force had also resulted in neutralization of a total of 7 Maoists in the Maad region on May 23.
More than 800 personnel of separate units of security forces were part of the operation that was launched after credible inputs of presence of Maoist cadres of the Indravati Area Committee of the outlawed CPI Maoist.
The operation launched in Maad region follows another such drive launched by the forces in Gangloor area of Bijapur district which led to neutralisation of as many as 12 Maoists on May 10.
Personnel belonging to District Reserve Guards, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Commando battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), Special Tasked Force and district police were part of the operation which later led to a fierce exchange of fire with the Maoists near Pediya forest area under the Gangloor police station limits of Bijapur.

Significantly, a total of 10 Maoists were also killed in an exchange of fire between the security forces and the cadres of outlawed CPI Maoist near Tekmeta forest in Narayanpur district in the wee hours of April 30.
The operation in Tekmeta follows another massive operation launched by the forces near Binnagunda forest area of Chotebethiya police station limits of Kanker, on April 16. The encounter that lasted for several hours had resulted in the killing of a total of 29 Maoists, including of a few top cadres.
It is noteworthy that over 125 Maoists have been so far eliminated in separate operations carried out by the security forces in separate regions of the state in a span of five months alone.
