Greg Sheridan, the Foreign Editor of The Australian, detailed the recent Indian general elections and evaluated their implications for India’s democracy and leadership. Sheridan’s insights highlight the integrity of India’s electoral process and the significant role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in shaping the country’s future.

Sheridan began by commending the election process, stating, “The results demonstrate that India runs clean, honest elections.” He dismissed claims by some commentators that Modi is a dictator, pointing out that “Dictators don’t go backwards in elections.”

The foreign editor further emphasised the global significance of India’s democratic practices, suggesting that “The prestige of democracy in the global south probably depends more now on India than the US.” This assertion states India’s emerging role as a model for democratic governance in the developing world.

Sheridan reflected on the election outcomes and said, “This election results, confirming continuity, but also confirming democracy, may be the best result.” He argued that the results, which indicate a continuation of Modi’s leadership, reinforce the stability and integrity of India’s democratic institutions.

Sheridan also critiqued the bias of Indian journalists writing for foreign media, stating that they tend to be more biased than their foreign counterparts. He highlighted the importance of objective reporting and praised the Indian electoral system’s transparency and fairness.

Discussing Modi’s prospects, Sheridan noted exit polls predicted a third consecutive term for the Prime Minister. “The exit polls predict that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in for a third straight term,” he reported, pointing out Modi’s overwhelming support among Hindu voters.

Sheridan described Modi as “a completely different style of leader,” characterising him as very religious and highly competent. “This is a very profound historical change,” he added, reflecting on Modi’s impact on India’s political landscape.

Economically, Sheridan highlighted India’s rapid growth under Modi’s leadership, noting that “India is gonna grow at 8 percent this year and is the fastest growing big economy in the world.” This economic performance is a testament to Modi’s effective governance and visionary policies.

Discuss India’s strategic position on the global stage, particularly concerning China. “It hasn’t become an absolute ally of the West, but it is a tremendous balancing force to China,” he observed. This geopolitical stance enhances India’s importance in international affairs as it navigates its relationships with major global powers.

Further, Sheridan lauded India’s unique democratic culture, stating, “Everyone loves India and it has a different democratic culture of all.” His analysis presents a positive outlook on India’s democratic resilience, economic potential, and strategic significance while reaffirming Narendra Modi’s pivotal role in leading the nation into its next development phase.
