In a stunning turn of events, the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has been dramatically altered as the heads of the region’s two major parties, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have both suffered defeat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024. The elections have seen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing two seats, while the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNF) and independent candidates each claimed two and one seat, respectively.
In Baramulla, independent candidate Abdul Rashid Shaikh emerged victorious, leaving Omar Abdullah trailing with 3.12 lakh votes compared to Abdullah’s 1.68 lakh votes.
Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the JKNF and a former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has conceded defeat on social media, expressing his confidence in the newly elected Members of Parliament, Rahullah Mehndi and Mian Altaf, to represent the region effectively in the Parliament.

The Anantnag-Rajouri seat witnessed a significant upset as well, with Mian Altaf Ahmed of the JKNF securing a win over Mehbooba Mufti, the chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP).
Ahmed garnered 4.59 lakh votes, surpassing Mufti’s 2.22 lakh votes by a margin of 2.36 lakh votes. Zafar Iqbal Khan Manhas of the ‘Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party’ also managed to collect 1.17 lakh votes in this election.
Both Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have a storied political history in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah has previously won three consecutive elections in Srinagar in 1998, 1999, and 2004, while his father, Farooq Abdullah, has won from the capital city four times. Mufti, on the other hand, has been a Member of Parliament from Anantnag in 2004 and 2014, with her father, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, also having served as a Chief Minister.
As the dust settles on this historic election, the people of Jammu and Kashmir eagerly await the new leadership to take the helm and address the pressing issues facing the region.
