Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused the Congress party of conspiring to divide Indians along religious lines amidst a heated debate over the issue of Muslim reservation. The comments come as Mallikarjun Kharge, a senior Congress leader, raised concerns about the lack of Muslim representation in Government jobs and demanded Muslim reservation.
In response to Kharge’s statements, PM Modi emphasised the principle of “sabka saath, sabka vikas” (inclusive development for all), stating that discrimination based on caste, creed, or gender should not be tolerated. He expressed opposition to religion-based reservations, arguing that they only serve to divide communities further.
PM Modi pointed out instances where Congress allegedly favoured religious appeasement, citing the overnight designation of Muslims as OBCs (Other Backward Classes) in Karnataka, a move that the Supreme Court later struck down. He also criticised Congress for attempting similar measures in Andhra Pradesh and accused the party of seeking to monopolise the Muslim vote bank.
PM Modi, while highlighting the importance of inclusive governance, reiterated his commitment to uplift all sections of society, particularly in aspirational districts where development initiatives have been implemented to improve living standards and opportunities.
Addressing concerns about regional parties allegedly capturing the minority vote bank, PM Modi warned against playing the Hindu-Muslim card and reiterated his commitment to unity and equality for all citizens regardless of religion.
In response to recent statements by Sharad Pawar advocating for regional parties to merge with Congress, PM Modi criticised Congress for seeking to suppress regional voices and accused the party of promoting divisive politics under the guise of secularism.
PM Modi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to national unity and condemning any attempts to exploit religious sentiments for political gain. He emphasised that his focus remains on inclusive development and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of their religious or cultural background.
