Sam Pitroda’s Remarks On Inheritance Law Stirred Row
Merely two weeks ago, Sam Pitroda, advocated for a US-style inheritance tax law in India. He said, “In America, there is an inheritance tax. If one has 100 million USD worth of wealth and when he dies, he can only transfer probably 45 per cent to his children, 55 per cent is grabbed by the government. That’s an interesting law. It says you, in your generation, made wealth, and you are leaving now, you must leave your wealth for the public, not all of it, half of it, which to me sounds fair,” Pitroda stated.
Inheritance tax, also known as estate tax, is a state levy on the assets an individual receives as part of an inheritance. While the US does not have a central inheritance tax, some states impose it.
Facing backlash from political circles, Pitroda clarified on April 24 that his comments were twisted to “deflect attention” from the core issues. However, his clarification came after the Congress party once again distanced itself from his remarks, and BJP leaders criticised both Pitroda and his party.
PM Narendra Modi came down heavily on the Congress party and Pitroda for adopting the policy of appeasement and trying to take the wealth that belonged to the Hindus and redistribute it among the Muslims.
Hua To Hua Remark On 1984 Riots
During the Lok Sabha elections in May 2019, Sam Pitroda sparked controversy with his dismissive remarks on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Pitroda’s response, “So what?” to a question about former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s alleged involvement in the riots, triggered widespread criticism and a political storm.
“Ab kya hai ’84 ka? Aapne kya kiya 5 saal mein, uski baat kariye. ’84 mein hua to hua,” Pitroda stated, implying that the events of 1984 were irrelevant compared to contemporary issues like job creation and urban development.
It was at that point in time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi seized upon Pitroda’s remarks, linking them to Rahul Gandhi and accusing the Congress party of insensitivity towards the victims of the riots. Rahul Gandhi, in response, condemned Pitroda’s comments and called for an apology.
The fallout from Pitroda’s remarks highlighted the sensitivity of the issue surrounding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which remains a deeply emotive and politically charged subject in India’s history.
