‘Enjoyed Seeing Myself Dance…’: PM Modi endorses poll humour after Bengal Police Issue notice over Mamata’s meme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent post on his X handle, featuring a spoof video of him dancing, contrasted with the response to a similar post of Mamata Banerjee, resulting in Kolkata Police issuing notices. While the Bengal police faced criticism for hunting the creator, PM Modi praised the creativity and enjoyed the portrayal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his X account on May 6 to share a spoof video, where he was seen walking and dancing on a stage. This comedic gesture by the Prime Minister comes in the wake of a similar video featuring West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Notably, the Mamata Banerjee video stirred controversy, issuing notices to X users who shared the clips.

PM Modi shared a post by X user Atheist Krishna, which read, “Posting this video cuz I know that ‘THE DICTATOR’ is not going to get me arrested for this.”

Sharing the post and the video, PM Modi said, “Like all of you, I also enjoyed seeing myself dance. Such creativity in peak poll season is truly a delight.”

Earlier, two individuals on X shared a spoof video of Mamata Banerjee on their respective handles. Subsequently, they received notices from the Cyber Crime division of Kolkata Police under Section 149 of CrPC (Prevention of cognizable offences).

“You are directed to immediately disclose your identity including name and residence. If the information sought is not revealed, you shall be liable for legal action u/s 42 CrPC,” the DCP (Cyber Crime), Kolkata Police posted in reply to the videos shared by the two users.

X user reacted to the police notice and said, “Kolkata Police is giving notices just for posting memes on Mamata Banerjee. Those who say there is no democracy under BJP Government in India they should sometimes visit West Bengal. So much Freedom of Speech in Bengal.”

The original video showcases American rapper Lil Yachty’s grand entrance onto the stage. Initially uploaded to YouTube on June 21, 2022, this clip has become a highly popular meme template.

Amit Malviya, the BJP’s IT cell chief, responded to the notice from Kolkata Police’s Cyber Crime division and said, “Relax @KolkataPolice – You have other more pressing issues on hand, rather than act like Mamata Banerjee’s doormat. For instance, TMC workers are assaulting women across Kolkata for having political views different from the ruling party or worse they have hung obscene posters deriding the Prime Minister across greater Kolkata areaâ€æ What have you done about them?”

Mamta didi ji this is called taking a chill pill, aap bhi kabhi le liya karo, hamesha gusse mein rehti ho, bachchon ne aapka dancing meme kya bana diya, aap toh unko jail mein daalne lagi. How uncool of you !! Sorry to say but you are too uptight, rigid and uncool. https://t.co/duaS2WBNu7

Some kids made your dancing video and you are trying to put them in jail). How uncool of you !! Sorry to say but you are too uptight, rigid and uncool.”
