A stone quarry storeroom was rocked by a devastating explosion, leaving at least four workers dead. The explosion that occurred on May 1, 2024, was captured by a CCTV camera at the site.  According to local sources, the blast occurred in a storage room situated atop a hillock where explosives and detonators were stored. It is believed that the explosion occurred during the process of loading and transporting materials into the store room, leading to a massive blast that razed the building to rubble.

Rescue teams swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving the news, deploying metal detectors to search for any unexploded explosives amidst the debris. The intensity of the explosion was such that it scattered human bodies around the site, leaving little hope for survivors.

Tiruneveli Zone DIG Ramya Bharati conducted an on-site study of the incident, witnessing the heartbreaking scenes of devastation and mourning as relatives of the victims grieved for their loved ones.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government is yet to announce any compensation for the families of the victims. The absence of immediate relief measures has compounded the anguish of the affected families, particularly as the Chief Minister, MK Stalin, is currently on a holiday with his family and associates at the Kodakanal hill station.

The impact of the explosion was felt across a 20-kilometre radius, with tremors spreading through the region. As the rescue operation continues, there are concerns that the death toll may rise further. In response to the tragedy, locals have called for a permanent ban on quarries storing highly powerful explosives, citing previous incidents in Virudhunagar district involving firecracker units that have resulted in the loss of human lives.
